Japan’s Naomi Osaka has maintained a strong front throughout the latter half of the year. At the onset of U.S Open 2020, the 23-year-old advocated and brought attention to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. She wore a mask with a different person’s name written on it before each match.

The names were of Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, Philando Castile and Tamir Rice. These people lost their lives to police brutality.

This action of Osaka’s brought about a lot of support. On the other hand, there were many who contested against her. They urged her to “keep politics out of sport.” Further, some cited this as a “distraction.” However, Naomi not only fired back at her haters but also lifted the U.S Open title for the second time.

Osaka’s response to the continued backlash

Naomi was often cited as an introvert on the WTA Tour. Although, when injustices of epic proportions were being carried out, Osaka was not one to remain silent. Moreover, this drift from her general persona added to the backlash she received. In addition, the tennis ace is continually receiving hate from many who don’t support her activism.

Responding to this, Osaka wrote on Twitter, “Note to my introverted 13-year-old self: in about 10 years you’re finally going to open your mouth and it will trigger more people than you could’ve ever imagined.”

Naomi’s gestures have been one of solidarity and support for the oppressed communities. Furthermore, she is honouring her Haitian and Japanese descendants by taking these necessary steps.
