Cristiano Ronaldo set to retain place in Portugal’s starting XI ahead of Nations League opener
Portuguese skipper Cristiano Ronaldo is all set to retain his place in Portugal’s match-day squads for the upcoming UEFA Nations League. The 39-year-old forward will feature for the nation’s opening 2024-25 Nations League fixtures against Croatia and Scotland.
There were some concerns over the Al-Nassr star’s inclusion following an underwhelming display at the recently concluded Euros. Ronaldo failed to score a single goal, as Portugal lost in the quarter-finals to France. Despite the criticism, manager Roberto Martinez has expressed his confidence in the aging forward, with eyes set on the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese record goal-scorer will be leading a new-look squad. It features a number of young debutantes, including Lille’s Tiago Santos, Chelsea’s Renato Veiga and 17-year-old Sporting CP star Geovany Quenda.
