Indian spinner and Punjab Kings star Yuzvendra Chahal, for the first time, publicly addressed his recent divorce from Dhanashree Verma, while also refuting allegations of cheating and infidelity. The couple’s five-year marriage came to an end earlier this year, in March.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma were married in a private ceremony in Gurgaon in 2020. Their relationship began during the COVID-19 pandemic when Chahal had approached Verma for dance lessons.

However, within a few years, cracks began to appear, leading to divorce rumors. The couple had already been living separately since 2022, and in February this year, filed a joint petition for divorce by mutual consent at the Bandra family court.

The court, after much deliberation, granted a divorce in March this year, thereby announcing an end to their relationship of five years. Furthermore, Yuzvendra Chahal was also directed to pay an alimony of INR 4.75 crores to his estranged wife, as the Bombay High Court also waived off the six-month cooling period between the two, citing that they had been living apart for three years with no hope of reconciliation.

Most recently, the 35-year-old, in a podcast with Raj Shamani, admitted that both he and Dhanashree Verma had agreed to conceal their separation and continue to act as a normal couple until their divorce was finalized. Furthermore, the leg-spinner revealed that the reason for their separation was a growing emotional disconnect, as both he and Dhanashree were intensely focused on their respective careers.

Regarding the cheating allegations leveled against him, particularly after he was seen with RJ Mahvash on several occasions, Chahal dismissed them as baseless. He stated that he has never cheated on anyone in his life and has remained fully loyal.

He criticized social media users who, despite having no knowledge of his personal life, made these unfounded allegations, and added that he has great respect for women, having been raised with two sisters.

I think when my divorce happened, people alleged me of being a cheater. I have never cheated in my life. I am not that kind of a person. You won’t find anyone more loyal than me.

Yuzvendra Chahal admitted that the public scrutiny and the personal struggles related to his divorce took a heavy toll on his mental health. The Haryana-born spinner revealed that he suffered from sleepless nights and fell into such a deep depression that he even had suicidal thoughts. He shared that he used to cry for two hours a day and even took a break from playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy last year.

I had suicidal thoughts, I was tired of my life, I used to cry for 2 hours. I used to sleep just for 2 hours. It went for 40-45 days. I wanted a break from cricket… Used to share suicidal thoughts with my friend.

Moeover, Chahal also clarified his alleged relationship with RJ Mahvash, stating that they have only ever been friends. He shared that Mahvash had been a pillar of support for him during this difficult phase, and he was pained by the fact that she was being called a ‘homewrecker’.

Yuzvendra Chahal, in a recent podcast with Raj Shamani, shared a heartbreaking anecdote from the aftermath of India’s painful 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final defeat to New Zealand. Chahal, who was a part of the playing XI in that game, which India lost by a narrow margin of just 18 runs, stated how the defeat had shattered the morale of the team. He recalled seeing Kohli, who had been dismissed for a single run by Trent Boult, secretly crying in the bathroom. Chahal crossed paths with Kohli when it was his turn to bat and saw tears in the former India captain’s eyes. He said (H/T News 18):

2019 World Cup, I saw him [Virat Kohli] crying in the bathroom. And then I was the last batter, when I was crossing him, he had tears in his eyes.

Chahal also expressed his regret over his performance in that semi-final, as he was India’s most expensive bowler, conceding 63 runs in his ten overs. He lamented his performance, noting that he wished he had bowled better, especially since it turned out to be MS Dhoni‘s final match.
