Zaccharie Risacher was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks as the number one pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. When the Hawks selected him, expectations were that he could lead them forward alongside Trae Young.

He was drafted ahead of Alex Sarr, Stephon Castle, Reed Sheppard, and other players who have already made a name for themselves in the league. So it wasn’t surprising that the Hawks saw him as the future face of their franchise.

While he made the NBA All-Rookie First Team, his rookie season didn’t leave a mark on anyone. Surprisingly, his minutes dropped in his second season.

After slowly falling out of the rotation toward the end of the regular season, he saw barely any playing time in the playoffs. He featured in just three of the seven games in the first round against the New York Knicks and averaged just 7.7 minutes per game.

Without any prior warning, Risacher was traded away by the Atlanta Hawks to the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team trade. To this day, the French international says he is still unsure what exactly went wrong.

I feel like I had a good first season. I was told I exceeded expectations. It was really surprising to me, this second season, I didn’t really know what was happening. I also was told the NBA was really competitive and it’s apart of the game. Someday you could be somebody who’s valuable and another day.

Zaccharie Risacher on Locked on Mavs

The move abruptly ended Zaccharie Risacher’s tenure with the Hawks. Following the move, he shared a goodbye message to the organization. The message caught everyone’s attention after Trae Young commented on it and took a subtle shot at his former team. He was also traded by the Hawks to the Washington Wizards earlier this year.

After averaging 12.6 points in his rookie season, Risacher saw his numbers drop in his second year. He averaged 9.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in 67 appearances last season and went on to average just 3.7 points in under eight minutes in the playoffs.

Fans react to Zaccharie Risacher not knowing what went wrong during his failed Hawks stint

The Hawks acquired Lu Dort in their three-team trade with the Mavs and Oklahoma City Thunder. Zaccharie Risacher hasn’t had a signature breakout moment yet after his first two seasons in Atlanta. So it is not surprising to see critics already labeling him one of the biggest busts for a number one pick.

However, Risacher admitted he wasn’t sure where things went wrong during his stint with the Hawks. His comments quickly went viral as fans buzzed across social media.

Fans called him out for his comments, as he just hasn’t lived up to expectations. It is unfair to judge his career on two seasons, but Risacher has the chance to respond to his critics as he plays alongside a young, hungry team in Dallas.

The Atlanta Hawks found their franchise superstar in Jalen Johnson

While the Atlanta Hawks placed their hopes on Zaccharie Risacher to lead them into the future, it looks like they found their franchise player in Jalen Johnson. Drafted as the 20th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, the forward has shown immense growth over the last three years.

NBA senior writer Ben Golliver believes the Hawks made the right decision in building their roster around Johnson.

The Hawks clearly made the right call by passing the torch from Trae Young to Jalen Johnson. He helped lead Atlanta to its most wins since 2015-16. His plus-3.2 net rating surpassed Young’s best mark in any previous seasons. [Now] Jalen must prove his game can fully translate to the postseason after an underwhelming series against the Knicks.

Even LeBron James has praised the 24-year-old and believes that he could be the modern-day Scottie Pippen. After leading the Hawks to the playoffs last season, Johnson struggled to translate his regular-season form into the postseason. It will be interesting to see how much the Hawks will grow in the upcoming season.
