With a 14–2 record, the Detroit Lions not only clinched the playoff spot but also the NFC North title. They could have relaxed in the Week 18 game against the San Francisco 49ers, yet they came to the play and destroyed their rivals at 40-34. However, before they even stepped on the field, Za’Darius Smith was already confident about the outcome and didn’t hesitate to taunt his opponents.

The Lions’ star defensive end made headlines with a bold pre-game taunt directed at the 49ers. While walking down the tunnel, Smith was caught on camera delivering a bold message, which seemingly set the tone for what was expected to be an intense clash on the field.

Don’t get scared now, mother f**kers.

After his disappointing run in the Cleveland Browns, the passer-rusher has proven to be a great addition to the Lions’ strong defense. The team acquired him as a replacement for the star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson, whose season-ending injury came as a big roadblock for the Lions where many even thought they lost their odds at the Super Bowl.

But the Lions pulled through by adding Smith in the active lineup, who recorded nine tackles, seven quarterback hits, and three sacks in the last five games as a rotational pass rusher.

Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell defends decision to play starters in Week 18

Usually, in the league, teams prefer making their starters relax and prepare for the playoffs to avoid the risk of injuries, once they have clinched the spot as well as the divisional title. But Detroit head coach Dan Campbell took a different approach when he made all his starters play– who in a dominating performance clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Yeah, it was on my mind, and I thought a lot about it. I thought about it leading up to the game, I thought about it last night. But I ended up settling on the right thing to do was to play these guys because we owed it to the team.

Additionally, Campbell reasoned his decision by saying that the Lions wanted to improve certain things before the playoffs kicked in, where they would have a handful of chances up to the Super Bowl level. He expressed that the team is all prepared offensively to dominate the postseason better than they did the regular season.
