Sanju Samson scored his second T20I hundred in the opening match of the four-match T20I series against South Africa in Durban. The wicketkeeper-batter from Kerala had failed to cement his position within the team due to his inconsistent performances. However, it seems like he has finally solidified his place in India’s T20I team at the age of 29.
Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan felt that Samson has wasted a lot of time in his international career and does not have much of it left. Khan praised Samson for his century. However, he went on to say that players have to make use of the opportunity that they get because of the competition for places in the side. Moreover, Khan said that Samson will be very satisfied with his latest performances, given that it was long overdue.
The retired fast bowler also said that Samson has taken his performance to the next level with his recent knocks. He talked about how Samson has been in the scheme of things for many years, has batted in various positions inside the team but has finally started scoring runs for the team when he has opened the innings.
Sanju Samson has been backed extensively by Gautam Gambhir
India’s current Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir, has always been a fan of the Rajasthan Royals captain. After becoming the Head Coach, he backed Samson and showed faith in his talent. Gambhir allowed him to open the innings, and this transformed the career of the Keralite as he did not have to worry about his spot in the T20I team.
He scored a hundred in the final T20I of the series against Bangladesh in Hyderabad. Yesterday, Samson scored 107 runs off 50 deliveries in Duran with a strike rate of 214. He smashed seven fours and 10 sixes.
Samson became the first Indian batter and the fourth overall to score two T20I centuries in successive innings. He also became the joint batter with Rohit Sharma to smash the most sixes in a T20I innings as India beat Proteas by 61 runs to take a 1-0 lead.
