The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that women’s silver medalist Roxana Cocos and men’s bronze medalist Razvan Martin had been stripped off their medals after testing positive for ‘multiple steroids in a reanalysis of their samples’.

Out of the 77 positive cases from the Olympics, only 9 were found then and there during the games. The remaining 68 cases have been found following a reanalysis program which had an improved test for steroids.

Another Romanian weightlifter, Gabriel Sincraian also returned a positive doping test which meant he was given a lifetime ban from weightlifting because of the fact that it was the third positive test. The members of Romania’s weightlifting team at the 2012 Olympics including those who had not returned a positive doping test were disqualified from their performances in the 2012 Olympics.

Due to the positive dope tests, those who had finished behind the banned weightlifters will now have their ranks upgraded. With Razvan Martin’s disqualification, North Korean Kim Myong-Hyok will be awarded the bronze medal. In the women’s category, due to Cocos’ disqualification, Anna Nurmukhambetova who won bronze will now be given the silver medal while Ubaldina Valoyes who finished fourth will be awarded the bronze medal.
