2020-21 season is on the roll with more leagues set to begin in the upcoming weekend. In what has been a period of uncertainty and discontent, football managed to thrive.
With now a whole new season undergoing, we put down five most spectacular games to look out for this weekend. They are all spicy encounters so you must get the popcorn ready.
Bayern Munich vs Schalke
Bundesliga starts with a cracker of a fixture between holders Bayern Munich and European place contenders Schalke. Both sides have an immense history between them. Hansi Flick’s Bayern achieved a staggering treble last campaign with potential to do something similar this time out. All eyes will be on Leroy Sane’s debut after the German-born winger made his switch from Manchester City this summer. Interestingly, he faces his boyhood club too this weekend. Bayern will be eyeing a ninth straight title under their name while Schalke will wish to better their 12th place finish after a poor second half of the last campaign in the 2020-21 season.
Borussia Dortmund vs Borussia Monchengladbach
Another game to watch out for in the first week of Bundesliga is the clash between two Borussia clubs. Last campaign, Dortmund was pipped by Bayern Munich yet again for the Bundesliga title. Lucian Favre’s men glimmered for much of the season but were derailed at the last. The story just repeats every season. However, Dortmund will try to get the first three points out of the fixture at Signal Iduna Park. Their opposition, Monchengladbach rounded off an impressive season by securing Champions league football. They also lead the chart in the first part of the season. It will be a nice game to watch.
Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid
The La Liga champs will start their title defense against Real Sociedad at Anoeta on Sunday evening. This clash in the previous season proved to be a bit of a controversy with Madrid leapfrogging Barcelona after a win. Zinedine Zidane will be wishing his side retain the silverware after winning it for a record 34th time. Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos were the prime contributors to the latest achievements. But a trip to San Sebastian will be a tricky fixture for them. Imanol Alguacil’s men finished sixth last campaign and thereby secured Europa League berth. Sociedad started this season with a draw away at Valladolid. Madrid will hope to start off the campaign brightly.
Wolves vs Manchester City
Premier League has already started but Manchester City’s have a delayed start to the 2020/21 campaign. Pep’s men will face a uphill task in Wolves on Monday night to definitively challenge for the title this time out. In Wolverhampton, they will find an opponent who did a league double over them. They played an absolute thriller in Molineux. The place will once again host this clash. The Cityzens will be wishing to seek revenge but Nuno Espirito’s men had already made a statement start to the season. They beat Sheffield United 2-0 on the opening day with Raul Jimenez scoring. Should, new signing, Nathan Ake start for City it will be his job to mark the Mexican striker.
Chelsea vs Liverpool
But the most eye-catching fixture everyone will look forward to this weekend is Chelsea taking on Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. This early high voltage clash will go on to provide insights into both club’s form in the new campaign. Chelsea made five major signings in the transfer market to strengthen up the squad. Of those, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz were handed their debut in a 3-1 win over Brighton at Amex. The former certainly impressed with quick flickery runs but overall the team’s performance wasn’t at the level. On the other hand, the title winners faced a spirited Leeds side that made the most of their top-flight game after 16 years. However, Liverpool won it 4-3 with Mo Salah scoring an incredible hat-trick. This crucial fixture hence plays a significant part in both teams to know their strength. You will certainly not miss this.
