The San Francisco 49ers have had a middling season so far. A season where they have already lost a couple of stud players to season-ending injuries. But no other injury has affected them as much as the one to superstar running back Christian McCaffrey.
The reigning Offensive Player of the Year missed the first eight games of the season due to Achilles tendonitis in his leg. He even went to Germany to meet a specialist so as to give him the best plan of recovery. All this time, he was on the Injured Reserve list as the team handed the reins to Jordan Mason.
Mason has done a remarkable job so far, racking up 685 yards. But crucially, those yards were not enough as the 49ers labored to a 4-4 record so far. Even though they are third in the NFC West, they need more if they are to win the division.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan was speaking on the show Tolbert & Copes on KNBR radio earlier. With their upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road, the offensive wizard was asked if his star running back would travel, and more importantly, play.
"He's been awesome these last 2 days. Hopefully that continues to go well. I expect to get him out there."

This will be great news for San Francisco 49ers fans as their most important player will most likely suit up this week. If anything, that alone should boost the confidence of the squad to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their house.
Kyle Shanahan might ease Christian McCaffrey in
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are no slouch of a team, especially their defense. They have a stud pass rush that can cause some worry for a player returning from injury. Any contact that could aggravate the injury will be on the minds of the coaching staff.
With Jordan Mason already doing a good job, Kyle Shanahan could use that to ease Christian McCaffrey back into the game. For instance, they could use their younger back to wear out the defense first before bringing in McCaffrey.
But it should be worth noting that Mason is still marked as questionable ahead of the game. He did practice earlier, but if his shoulder injury does not heal, it could complicate matters. Mason’s hard running style could be handy early on.
But in the long run, fans of the San Francisco 49ers should be happy. If Kyle Shanahan can design schemes utilizing both backs, it could spell trouble for the rest of the league. It will also keep McCaffrey fresh, unlike last season where they over-utilized him.
