Finally, the reason behind Christian McCaffrey’s visit to Germany makes more sense. The San Francisco 49ers All-Pro running back received confirmation that he definitely has Achilles’ tendonitis in his leg.

McCaffrey, who hasn’t played football since the Super Bowl, discovered the issue in his leg during the off-season but continued to practice. Eventually, they put him on the injured reserve list right after his marriage.

The 28-year-old remained on it throughout the 49ers’ first four games of the new season. He then made a pit stop in Germany for further evaluation.

The visit cleared up a lot of doubts, according to NBC Sports Bay Area 49ers writer Matt Maiocco (H/T: 49ers webtalk). Christian McCaffrey has Achilles tendonitis, but it’s bilateral, which means it’s in both of his legs.

When will Christian McCaffrey return for the 49ers?

McCaffrey had one of the best seasons any running back could hope for, bagging the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year award. The 49ers extended his contract to two more years for $19 million annually, making him one of the highest-paid rushers in the NFL.

However, it was the next silverware on the Standford graduate’s mantlepiece that struck fear in every football fan’s heart, especially fantasy football fanatics. After the Super Bowl in February, EA picked Christian McCaffrey as the cover for Madden 25.

The infamous Madden curse struck McCaffrey hard, and he continues to feel the effect of it.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan seemed confident about McCaffrey’s quick return, but after Maiocco’s revelation, they have to delay it further into the future. Jordan Mason has slotted in nicely for the time being, but quarterback Brock Purdy’s connection with McCaffrey will undeniably be a big miss.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter discussed McCaffrey’s position and a potential timeline for his return on the Pat McAfee Show.

I don’t think the 49ers know when he’s coming back [or] I don’t think anybody knows when he’s coming back. They have talked and said that they are going to begin to ramp up Christian McCaffrey potentially this week to see how he is feeling. Ideally, you would like to think that he is better that the time off will help, but who knows how his Achilles and calf is going to react.

Schefter further added that the 49ers thought they would be able to get McCaffrey to practice this week to evaluate his progress, but after the recent development, that perhaps could be pushed back further down the line. At the very least he can enjoy the new Los Angeles mansion, which he and his wife Olivio Culpo recently purchased.
