Paris Saint-Germain’s poor run of form continues, as they were defeated by Bayern Munich on Wednesday in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16. Lionel Messi and Neymar were ineffective, while Kylian Mbappe was left on the bench for the majority of the match owing to a thigh injury.
This meant PSG has already lost 5 of the 11 games they have played since the turn of the year, more than they lost in 46 games in 2022. PSG lined up in a conservative 5-3-2 formation against the Bavarian giants who bossed the midfield without any pressure. Both PSG midfielders Kimmich and Goretzka ran the show in the first half. Kimmich finished the game with 102 touches and completed 71 passes at a 91% rate. He also won four ground duels and three interceptions in the middle of the pitch. Bayern ‘wunderkind’ Jamal Musiala was also on song during the match skipping past PSG players at will. He completed the game with 6 dribbles, the highest of the match.
Former PSG player Kingsley Coman scored from a volley in the second half from an Alphonso Davies cross in the 53rd minute to break the deadlock. Mbappe was brought in after the goal to salvage the game. While having Mbappe did tip the game in favor of the Parisians, but it didn’t change the outcome. Mbappe saw his goal disallowed deep into the second half, to add to the misery. Messi was pretty much invisible on the field, and Neymar did not do any better. Benjamin Pavard was shown a second yellow card for a rough tackle on Messi right outside of the penalty box. He was sent off in the dying moments of the game, meaning he will miss the rematch.
PSG has now lost three games in a row. The French superteam would have to win in the Allianz arena by a better goal difference to proceed to the knockout stages of the tournament. PSG, despite spending huge in acquiring superstars for the last decade, are yet to win the Champions League. They did reach the finals in 2020 but fell to today’s opponents.

Twitter users respond to PSG’s disappointing performance

PSG’s performance against Bayern Munich was poor, as they conceded from a goalkeeping howler from Gianluigi Donnaruma. Kingsley Coman returned to haunt PSG as he scored the match-winning goal in the 2020 Champions League final against them.
Neymar and Messi failed to deliver and were deafeningly quiet throughout the game. Twitter has reacted to PSG’s awful performance. Here are some reactions:
PSG is looking to offload Messi and Neymar in order to construct a squad around Mbappe. PSG will strive to recover in the reverse fixture next month and will now focus on Sunday’s encounter against LOSC Lille.
