The Ashes is well and truly alive. Australia won the first two Tests but England have won the third Test and kept their hopes to bring back the Urn. But it was not a straightforward win for the hosts as Pat Cummins and Co. made England work hard for every run. In fact, Australia had one foot in the door as England were reduced to 171/6 while chasing 251 in their second innings.

But the visitors could not bury the ghosts of Headingley and lost the match by three wickets despite a herculean bowling effort from Mitchell Starc who claimed a five-wicket haul. Meanwhile, England had Harry Brook and Mark Wood to thank for saving the hosts. While Wood took a total of seven wickets and scored 40 runs off just 16 balls, Brook scored a gutsy 75 in the second inning.

The young batter held one end intact when England kept losing wickets from the other. Had it not been for Brook’s inning, Australia might have closed the game by a fair margin. Nevertheless, it was a win for the Ben Stokes-led team and England fans were over the moon as Chris Woakes hit the winning run. Woakes creamed Starc for a boundary on the off-side much like how Stokes had hit Pat Cummins in 2019 to finish things off.

Quite obviously, Mark Wood was named the Player of the Match for his crucial contribution. The pacer was delighted to play a key role and revealed how it felt being there in the middle with Starc and Cummins steaming in to bowl. “Delighted to be here to stand as the Man of the Match. The lads will tell you there are sweaty palms. Was tough against some of the best bowlers in the world, it’s the first time I’ve got England over the line with the bat so I’m delighted,” said Wood (quotes via Cricbuzz).
