Sergio Perez has been struggling with Red Bull for the better part of the 2023 season. Many have stated his own lack of abilities as the cause for it, while some have blamed Red Bull for potentially sabotaging the Mexican. Amidst all the controversy surrounding him, Perez has admitted that the upgrades on the RB-19 do not play to his strengths at all.
Perez had a disappointing return from the summer break at Zandvoort. After getting the lead in the early stages of the race, he dropped down to finish P4 after some questionable team strategies. Perez said that the team is trying to make the fastest car on the grid, and that does not mean that it would necessarily suit his personal driving style as well.
“In a way, yes, it happened, it happened again. At the end of the day, the team is trying to make the fastest car. Sometimes the development suits one style better than another. That’s how it works,” Perez is quoted by the Athletic.
Perez holds the second place in the WDC standings with a reliable 33-point lead over Fernando Alonso. However, he is under insurmountable pressure due to the massive 128-point difference between him and Max Verstappen, who drive the same car.

Red Bull clarify their position amidst rumours of Alex Albon replacing Sergio Perez in 2024

Sergio Perez’s string of poor performances as compared to Max Verstappen has ignited many rumors of him being replaced, with the list containing several drivers. The latest was Alex Albon, who has driven for Red Bull in the past. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko recently made Red Bull’s stance clear regarding Perez’s place with the team.
Marko once again made it very clear that Perez will see out the remainder of his contract with Red Bull, which will end at the end of the 2024 season. He insisted that the team is pushing for him to do better. As for Albon, Marko bluntly stated that the Thai driver had his chance with them, and while he might be doing wonders with Williams, he is not a target for Red Bull at the moment.
“We are pressuring him [Perez] to do better, as we want to finish second in the championship… Albon has already had his chance. He has improved remarkably since then, but at the moment there is no driver who is on Max’s level,” said Marko.
