Palmweiras star Estevão Willian ‘Messinho’ has been heavily linked with a move to Spanish giants FC Barcelona. The 16-year-old has caught the attention of several top clubs in Europe. However, both club and player have come to an understanding that FC Barcelona looks like his next destination. As per the latest reports, Palmeiras have also acknowledged Estevão’s decision to join Barcelona.
As per existing rules in Europe, ‘Messinho’ will not be able to join Barcelona until he turns 18, as was the case with Endrick to Real Madrid. Even though Barcelona’s financial constraints ruled out the proposed move, the club have now decided to go forward with the deal. Since the player has shown great interest in joining the club, Barcelona have reached out to Messinho’s agent, Andre Curry.
Barcelona have been handed an extra boost in the player’s pursuit after Palmeiras have also given the green light for Messinho’s choice of club. However, since the player will not be able to move to Barca before 2025, the mode of payment is also expected to be delayed and in parts.
While the player is clear on joining Barcelona, a significant offer from another club may change Palmeiras’ mind on the transfer. It was reported that Manchester United, PSG and Arsenal are all behind the player’s signature. His release clause is set at €45 million.
Messinho – the reason behind the name
Several players have been compared to Barcelona legend Lionel Messi. From dribbling style to flair and shooting, many players have tried and failed to live up to the expectations of being compared to the legendary #10. A quick look at the player’s early career shows why he picked such a name. Estevão initially picked ‘Messinho’ for the most obvious of reasons – as a homage to Lionel Messi.

Fans have noticed similarities in the youngster’s playing style as compared to the Argentine. Estevão Willian‘s prowess on the pitch doesn’t end there. He recently made his first-team debut for Palmeiras after mesmerizing performances in the youth team. He debuted for Palmeiras’ senior team in December against Cruzeiro. Off the pitch, Estevão’s name is likely to ring a bell with Nike.
The 16-year-old is the youngest ever Brazilian to sign a deal with Nike, at only ten years old. He beat Real Madrid star Rodrygo to the feat. Estevão is also the fourth youngest player to don the Palmeiras jersey. He won the Brasileiro Série A title alongside Real Madrid’s Endrick in December. The player will turn 18 on 24th April 2025.
