“Totally different challenge this weekend at Portimao,” claims Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso signed up for F1 team, Alpine this season, after a two-year hiatus from the sport. The two time F1 champion will drive alongside Esteban Ocon this season. Alonso has managed to get one point this season, from the opening two races in Bahrain and Imola. However, those were the two tracks he has raced in before.

Next up is the Portugal Grand Prix, which will take place this weekend. The circuit is a challenging one according to Fernando Alonso. Last year, the Portimao GP was held for the first time ever, and it is expected to pose some challengers.

It will be a totally different challenge this weekend at Portimão compared to Bahrain and Imola,” he said in Alpine’s preview for the race,” Alonso added.

The circuit is very fun to drive and I think in these modern Formula 1 cars it will be very exciting, especially with the huge elevation changes. I’ve only tested here before in very wet conditions, so it will be a bit of a learning curve to begin with, but I love new challenges. We want to score more points this weekend,he added.

Fernando Alonso takes positives from Imola

Both Alpine drivers finished among the points at Imola GP. Esteban Ocon finished on the ninth spot, whereas, Fernando Alonso finished on the tenth spot. The Spaniard struggled during the Imola GP, which was also interrupted due to a red flag. However, the Spaniard has taken positives from the race in Italy, and hopes to do better in Portugal.

It was a very tough weekend for everyone. It was like doing three races in one, with the wet and dry conditions as well as the red flag,” he said.

I learnt a lot from the weekend and especially after such a limited amount of testing in pre-season and only 32 laps in Bahrain during race conditions,” Alonso added.

Looking back at the weekend we were obviously happy to score our first points of the season, and the upgrades we brought to the car were positive and worked well. I felt happier with the overall feel of the car and I think there is more potential there for us to improve,” he continued.
