French Open 2021: Sublime Swiatek sails into the third round with a victory over Rebecca Peterson

Iga Swiatek

As dominant as ever, defending champion Iga Swiatek thrashed Rebecca Peterson in straight sets 6-1,6-1 in just 61 minutes to enter the third round of 2021 French Open. She is currently on an eight match winning streak and has lost just once in the last 18 matches she has played on Clay.

In the two matches she has played, Swiatek has dropped just 7 games. She has held 14 of 16 service games and has broken serve in 11 of 16 return games. Interestingly, she has won 70% points in the first round and 86% points in the second while returning on the second serve.

Swiatek was in no mood to settle as she blazed past Peterson right from word go. She broke the Swedish star upfront in the opening game and served out the next game in under 2 mins. She went into her ruthless mode and showed everyone why she is the best on Clay currently. She won the next 4 games and stormed to a 5-0 lead. It was looking like the Pole would bagel Peterson but she got broken courtesy a momentary lapse of concentration but broke back again to win the first set 6-1.

Swiatek too good for Peterson

Peterson wasn’t able to hold serve all first set and was looking very vulnerable against a fiery Swiatek. The defending champion replicated the story of the first set in the second. She broke the Swedish player twice in two games and ran away with a 5-0 lead.

She again had a chance to bagel Peterson but the World No.60 held serve for the first time in the match and got the scoreboard running. As the clock ticked the hour mark, Swiatek served out the set 6-1 with a forehand winner.

The eighth seed will next face Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in the third round on Friday. Kontaveit defeated Kristina Mladenovic in straight sets 6-2,6-0 on Court Suzanne Lenglen to end the French prospects in Singles.
