It cannot be a bigger day for teen sensation Coco Gauff. The teenager from America, all of 17 years of age, not only made it to the last-eight stage of the French Open 2021, her first across any Grand Slam, but has also clinched a historic spot in the USA’s women’s team for the Tokyo Olympics 2020, beginning on 23rd July. With this Gauff is all set to make her debut at the quadrennial event at the age of just 17.

Gauff will be accompanied by 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, former Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin and another fast rising player Jennifer Brady, making America’s team as one of the strongest in Tokyo. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) will be releasing the rankings on June 14, which is exactly a day after the completion of French Open, which will serve as an official confirmation for Gauff’s participation at the biggest sporting event in the world.

According to NBC sports, Gauff is all set to break another record as she will become the youngest tennis player at the Olympics since 2000 Sydney Games.

Gauff’s selection hasn’t come as much of a surprise as she has performed consistently this season. The American began the year as World No.48 and was America’s 9th-ranked player. However, Gauff played some scintillating tennis and is now ranked at 25 just 11 places below Brady. Gauff’s consistent performances gave her a much deserved reward as the teen made it to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros earlier today.

Gauff made a mismatch of what could have been a blockbuster encounter as she demolished 25th-seed Ons Jabeur in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to make it to the last-eight stage for the first time in any of the Majors.
