Boris Becker has said that tennis needs both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. He spoke about this ahead of Sinner’s impending return to the sport next month.
Sinner has been out for three months due to a doping ban. He tested positive for a banned substance called clostebol in March 2024. Even though he hasn’t played since winning the Australian Open in January 2025, he will still be world No. 1 when he returns.

Jannik Sinner headlines two more events alongside Rome Masters
World No.1 Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz will headline strong player fields in Hamburg and Geneva. These ATP events take place just before Roland Garros, with 22 of the world’s top 30 players expected to compete.
Hamburg, now held during the Roland Garros qualifying week, will feature top names. Three players from the top 10—Sinner, Andrey Rublev, and Holger Rune—are set to play. They will be joined by five more from the top 20, including Musetti, Paul, Tiafoe, Tsitsipas, and Auger-Aliassime.
Sinner has recently returned to training at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. He will rejoin the ATP Tour at the Rome Masters on May 5, after serving a three-month ban. Hamburg will be only his third tournament of the year, following the Australian Open and his suspension.
The Italian aims to stay world No. 1 and continue his Grand Slam winning streak. He already holds titles from the 2024 US Open and 2025 Australian Open. The full Hamburg lineup also includes Cerundolo, Humbert, Mensik, Korda, Lehecka, and Davidovich Fokina.
Jannik Sinner’s return date revealed
Jannik Sinner is set to return to action as world number one at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2025. The tournament will be held at the Foro Italico in Rome from April 29 to May 18. Sinner’s comeback is highly awaited after months away from the sport.
He was suspended due to an accidental contamination with clostebol. His ban ended on April 13, and he is now ready to compete again. Sinner will play his first match in Rome on May 4. It will be a special tournament, with Alexander Zverev returning to defend his 2024 title.
Despite missing matches, Sinner has stayed at the top of the rankings. Neither Zverev nor Carlos Alcaraz could overtake him, though they have closed the gap.
Italian tennis has been active in his absence. Lorenzo Musetti impressed with big wins over Tsitsipas and De Minaur. Matteo Berrettini also had a strong showing, beating Zverev. Young players like Flavio Cobolli and Luciano Darderi have started winning titles. On the women’s side, Jasmine Paolini continues to rise.
