Chennai Super Kings became the first team to be eliminated from the 2025 IPL play-offs race, a rather poor record for the five-time winners, who have been a traditionally consistent franchise. CSK also broke Pune Warriors India’s long-standing record of the quickest IPL elimination, this season.

CSK’s defeat to in-form Punjab Kings marked their eighth loss of the season, and their third in a row. The Men in Yellow, who remain the most successful franchise in IPL history, as a result of their recent defeat, got eliminated from the playoffs race. Interestingly, it also marked the first time, in the competition’s 18-year history, that CSK failed to qualify for the play-offs in back-to-back editions.

Wednesday’s defeat to PBKS marked a new low for the five-time winners, who have made it to the IPL playoffs 12 times, and to the IPL final, a staggering ten times. The 2025 elimination for CSK marked the second time that the team became the first to be ruled out of the play-offs race. Back in 2020, the Men in Yellow were also the first team to be eliminated, subsequently finishing 7th on the table.

Against PBKS, who had already secured a win against CSK in the previous meeting between the two sides earlier this season, the Men in Yellow posted a first innings total of 190 runs. They were guided by Sam Curran’s brilliant knock of 88 runs off just 47 balls, with the Englishman hitting nine boundaries and four sixes. He was supported by South African Dewald Brevis, who chipped in with a crucial 32-run knock.

Punjab chased down the 191-run target in 19.4 overs, with four wickets in hand. Prabhsimran Singh scored 54 runs off 36 balls, while PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer scored 72 runs off just 41 balls. Shashank Singh aptly supported his captain with a 12-ball 23 at the end, helping his side cruise to a comfortable win. It marked CSK’s fifth defeat at Chepauk this season, the most they have lost at home in a season.

Moreover, Chennai Super Kings’ also broke an unwanted IPL record, previously held by Pune Warriors India. The Men in Yellow became the earliest team to be eliminated from the IPL group stages, after 10 games. The last time that a team got eliminated at such an early stage was in the 2013 season, when PWI, ended the 2013 season with just four wins from 16 matches.

Nonetheless, CSK’s early elimination does demonstrate the unpredictable nature of the IPL. The Men in Yellow have now set their eyes on building a team for the future, as the Yellow Army fans eagerly await for their favorite team to make a comeback.

CSK call-up three uncapped players for mid-season trials, despite early IPL 2025 elimination

Gujarat’s Urvil Patel, Kerala’s Salman Nizar and Mumbai’s Aman Hakim Khan participated in Chennai Super Kings’ mid-season trials, on the 27th and 28th of April. They are being evaluated as potential additions to the CSK squad for the 2026 IPL season, after the team’s early exit this season.

Wicket-keeper batter Urvil Patel, who holds the record for the fastest T20 ton by an Indian, smashing a 28-ball 100 against Tripura in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, impressed the CSK selectors. The 26-year-old scored 41-runs off 20 balls in his first trial game, followed by a 20-ball half-century in his second innings. Salman Nizar and Aman Khan also drew praise and appreciation at the trials.

Both Urvil and Nizar had been called up for the CSK trials, earlier this season, alongside Ayush Mhatre, to replace the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, the 17-year-old made it into the team. Urvil Patel does have the experience of playing in the IPL, having been a part of the Gujarat Titans squad in 2023.
