In his time with Joe Gibbs Racing, Kyle Busch built one of the most successful race teams in the history of Truck and Xfinity Series, Kyle Busch Motorsports. The two times Cup champion won three drivers’ championship and 113 races with the team, that gave some of the best drivers in the TRD Cup garage their first shot at NASCAR racing.

But everything goods must come to an end, as KBM’s 77,000-square-foot shop in Mooresville was sold to Spire Motorsports, which was expanding its operations. The team ceased all its operations and shifted it’s focus to Brexton Busch’s career. Kyle Busch in his latest appearance in DBC podcast how much he misses the owner driver days and the growth of his team.

I still kind of miss those days. You know, I do miss the camaraderie and those people. Those guys that were always there, every single day, working to make that company as strong as it was, and competitive and dominant in the Truck Series.

Kyle Busch said via Door Bumper Clear Podcast.

During the conversation he revealed that as the team started to look like little bit grimmer on sustainability, maybe due to the extra financial strain that came with his move from TRD to Chevy by signing with RCR in 2023, was a wake-up call. He decided to sell the shop as well as team’s resources and that’s when Spire came knocking.

Miss working with the Toyota guys as well, on that front, but just kind of came to a point where it was starting to look a little bit grimmer on sustainability. I was like, ‘You know what? This might be the time to just kind of say, Hey, if there’s anybody out there, you know, come take it.’…all of a sudden, a knock on the door from the Spire guys.

Kyle Busch added.

Kyle Busch had reservations about Spire Motorsports’ plan with his shop

Spire has huge plans with the KBM race shop they acquired, they were planning to move all their Cup, Xfinity and Truck Series operations to a shop that wasn’t bog enough to host such a huge operation, as they regularly fielded multiple cars.

Kyle Busch was concerned if the team would have been able to do that, but to his surprise they made it happen and has been thriving in Cup and Truck since. The deal also now gives his opportunity to race five trucks a year with the team, like he used to in the past.

I’m like, Guys, there’s not enough room for all of that.’ So, they made it work, somehow, some way. But it is certainly full over there. But yeah, the chassis shop was always great. Those guys are amazing. Build real, fast trucks. I still get to go run my five truck races a year, which is fun.

Kyle Busch said.

The veteran has already started a race with team in 2025, at Atalanta, which he won. He has four more races left in the schedule to run and it would be interesting to see how many he can win, as he cherishes the memories of KBM days at Spire.
