The Monaco GP is the crown jewel of the F1 calendar. The Monte Carlo weekend is undoubtedly the most iconic race in the sport. However, the incredible optics usually do not result in good on-track action, with this year’s round being just another example. Now, reigning world champion Max Verstappen has taken a dig at the weekend yet again.
Verstappen is no fan of the Monaco GP. Despite being more of a traditionalist, the Dutch driver does not like the narrow characteristics of the circuit, which makes overtaking very difficult. This season, F1 mandated two pitstops for all drivers in the race, in a bid to make things more exciting. However, this was not the case and Max Verstappen slammed this rule change.
The four-time world champion finished in fourth place after making his second mandated pitstop with just one lap to go. After the race, Max Verstappen was asked what could make the race more entertaining for fans. The 27-year-old joked that perhaps F1 should learn something from the famous game Mario Kart.
The Red Bull star pictured drivers using the special banana item from the game to make rivals spin and gain an advantage. Certainly, this could be an amusing sight, but these comments show that Verstappen is really not happy with the Monaco track.
We’re almost doing mario kart. Then we have to install bits on the car maybe you can throw bananas around!

Max Verstappen admits Red Bull slower than 2024 at Monaco GP
The Monaco GP circuit historically used to be a strong track for Red Bull. During the turbo hybrid era, Milton Keynes had one of its best weekends in Monte Carlo courtesy of its strong chassis. However, things have changed in the ground-effect era. The Austrian team does not enjoy an advantage on slower tracks against the likes of McLaren and Ferrari.

Max Verstappen claimed that the car has not improved for such conditions, stating that he was slower in Qualifying compared to last year’s race. The 27-year-old accepted that Red Bull was still facing issues and a fourth place result was not good enough for the title fight. Verstappen pointed out that the struggles in Monte Carlo has become an alarming trend for Milton Keynes.
This year’s car, I don’t think it improved on this circuit (Monaco). We were slower than last year in qualifying. It’s clear that we’re struggling here [..] of course I’m not happy with fourth place, but I have to accept it. Every year we try to do better here. But it doesn’t work out, for whatever reason.
Max Verstappen said, as quoted by De Telegraaf
Certainly, Max Verstappen and Red Bull might need to go back to the drawing board to understand its weaknesses at tracks like Monaco. The Austrian team simply does not have an answer to rival teams in slow conditions. This could have a detrimental effect on Verstappen’s title prospects if it is not resolved soon. Though, the reigning world champion can expect stronger performance next weekend in Spain.
