In an outcome that no one saw coming, Joe Hendry lost his TNA World Championship at WWE NXT’s Battleground PLE on Sunday. He was up against Trick Williams, who didn’t oust the Scot in the most convincing-yet-effective manner. During the closing moments, The Anointed One brought the TNA title inside the ring, but the referee reprimanded Williams for it.

The South Carolina native eventually landed Hendry face-first on the TNA title belt, followed by a second trick shot finishing maneuver of the match to keep the Scot grounded for the count of three. By doing so, Williams became the new TNA World Champion, a feat that no active WWE Superstar had achieved up until this point. For the unversed, WWE and TNA have an official working partnership in place.

Williams would be entitled to appear on TNA programming as well, apart from being an NXT talent. Hendry, on the other hand, must be crestfallen at the result. While the latter isn’t essentially under a WWE contract, he’s had a number of outings for the company. But what would undoubtedly stand out for him is the fact that he got to represent the TNA world title in front of over 60,000 fans at WrestleMania 41 last month.

The King of Entrances came in as a last-minute replacement to battle Randy Orton. Even though The Viper didn’t find it difficult to beat the 37-year-old, Hendry shined in his role as well. It must’ve been an overwhelming experience for the Edinburgh-born wrestler to take on a legend like Orton on The Grandest Stage of Them All.

What did Joe Hendry experience backstage after WrestleMania match?

Days after having the best night of his professional career at WrestleMania 41, Joe Hendry spoke to Chris Van Vliet on Insight. He detailed the turn of events that happened to him after he’d returned backstage from his match against Randy Orton. Hendry got some feedback about his outing from Orton himself, followed by run-ins with CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Stephanie McMahon, and more.

The Global Hero said that he watched the rest of WrestleMania with William Regal, whom Hendry had known from early on in his career. After John Cena was coming back to the gorilla position from winning his 17th world title, he spotted Hendry and immediately stopped by to talk.

The Scot underscored the humility of the wrestler-turned-actor, who offered advice to Hendry and didn’t even try to make the conversation about himself. Cena congratulated Hendry for implementing the advice that he’d given the Scot during this year’s Royal Rumble.

The Franchise Player went on to say to Hendry’s face that he’s going to be a major player in this business. The Prestigious One was so overwhelmed by the kind words of Cena that he wondered if his day could get any better. Just then, AJ Styles came up to Hendry and expressed his disbelief about the TNA world title’s representation at WrestleMania.

Joe Hendry remains optimistic about wrestling John Cena

Joe Hendry has said on a number of occasions that he wants to wrestle John Cena before he rides off into the sunset. The Scot was asked by Chris Van Vliet if he actually thought it was still a possibility because the clock is ticking down on Cena’s remaining dates with WWE.

Hendry outright said that he believes it’ll happen. He just didn’t know how and when. Hendry revealed that The Franchise Player told him backstage at the Royal Rumble that he’s got no problem with his name being mentioned by The Prestigious One during interviews.

That of course it’s possible. Do I think it’ll happen? Yes. My track record is looking pretty good…..(laughs)

However, the Peacemaker star did tell Hendry that the onus is on the latter to make it happen. Hendry said he does have some ideas that he’d want everyone to see unfold in due time. Cena, on the other hand, just beat R-Truth at Saturday Night’s Main Event and is set for an epic tag team match at Money in the Bank.
