Carlos Alcaraz won his fifth Grand Slam title in thrilling fashion at Roland Garros. He saved three championship points to defeat Jannik Sinner in an epic five-set final, winning 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6(10-2). With this comeback, Alcaraz became the third man in the Open Era to save at least one championship point and go on to win a major final.

This showdown marked the first time Alcaraz and Sinner had met in a Grand Slam final. Their rivalry, which began at the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris in 2021, reached a new level on Sunday. The match turned into the longest final in Roland Garros history, lasting five hours and 29 minutes.

Throughout the contest, both players displayed their incredible athleticism and mental toughness. Sinner had the upper hand early, but Alcaraz refused to give in. As the match wore on, the Spaniard grew stronger and managed to push the final into a decisive fifth-set tiebreak.

In the final tiebreak, Alcaraz delivered his best tennis. With nerves at their peak, he struck four winners. The match ended with a stunning forehand passing shot down the line that left Sinner rooted to the spot. It was a fitting finish to a historic and unforgettable battle.

Every generation of players produce a final that is worth remembering. In 1980, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe produced one of the greatest Grand Slam finals in history as the Swede clinched the title in five sets.

Then, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal produced a similar iconic final in 2008, where Nadal won his first Wimbledon title in near darkness. Novak Djokovic and Nadal rose the standards to impossible heights in the 2012 Australian Open final, as the Serb won in five hours and 53 minutes.

Now, Alcaraz and Sinner have produced the longest Roland Garros final ever. Considering the way in which both players have dominated the game for the last few years, it is likely that we are going to see them on big podiums together time and time again.

Carlos Alcaraz extends Big Titles lead

Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz added another chapter to his growing legacy by defeating Jannik Sinner in a dramatic French Open final. The win gave Alcaraz his 12th Big Title, which includes Grand Slams, ATP Masters 1000 events, the Nitto ATP Finals, and Olympic singles gold. Sinner was on the verge of victory with three championship points in the fourth set, but Alcaraz turned the match around to widen the gap between them in Big Titles.

Alcaraz has now won three Big Titles during the current clay season, having already triumphed in Monte-Carlo and Rome. At just 22 years and 34 days old, he became the third-youngest player to win five Grand Slam titles, following only Bjorn Borg and Rafael Nadal. He also became the eighth man in the Open Era to successfully defend the French Open crown.

Alcaraz lifted his first major trophy at the 2022 US Open when he was 19. Since then, he has captured at least one Grand Slam title in four straight years. With two French Open and two Wimbledon titles under his belt, he has now won three of the four Grand Slam events, with only the Australian Open missing from his collection.

By winning in Paris, Alcaraz improved his Big Title win rate to one for every 4.2 events played. This puts him ahead of Roger Federer’s 4.4 and just behind Nadal (3.5) and Djokovic (3.2). Sinner, who was aiming for his third straight Grand Slam win and a step closer to the Career Grand Slam, fell short despite a strong performance.
