Phil Mickelson reminded the golfing fans of his skills in the final round of the LIV Golf Virginia on Sunday. The 6-time major champion set the internet on fire with a jaw-dropping chip shot.

In the final round of the event, the “Lefty” found himself in the top half of the leaderboard. On the par-4 17th hole, his approach shot landed on the rough side of the greens. This seemingly made things harder for him.

Instead of playing it safe and trying to avoid the bunker, the 54-year-old did something else. He stunned everyone as he chipped it shot in the air.

His short backward chip would sail perfectly in the air and roll into the hole after landing. The fans present at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club were left awestruck as Mickelson pulled off an incredible shot to save the par on this hole.

In the press conference after the event, Mickelson admitted that he was a bit ‘surprised‘ himself to see his move work off well.

It was hard guessing how much it was going to hook because it was soft greens and I had such an uphill lie, the ball was going to go high, but just judging how much the ball was going to come over my shoulder, that was the challenge. Even I was a little bit surprised.

The HyFlyers GC captain went on to birdie this hole and made another birdie on the final hole. He made 7 birdies and 1 bogey to finish with a score of 6-under 65 in the final round and finished T4, 2 shots behind eventual winner Joaquin Niemann.

Brandel Chamblee took another swipe at Phil Mickelson and LIV Golf recently

Ever since Phil Mickelson left the PGA Tour and started playing for the LIV Golf league, Brandel Chamblee has become a strong critic of him. Recently, he once again took a swipe at him and his league on social media.

In a post on X, a user would ask Chamblee whether he sometimes watches LIV Golf and studies it. The analyst sounded off on the Public Investment Fund (PIF) backed tour once again and threw a major shade at Mickelson and his former CEO Greg Norman.

The only time anyone seems to pay any attention to LIV is when Mickelson or Norman make insanely idiotic comments about the skill of LIV players. Phil Mickelson has mastered the public art in which self-righteousness congratulates the celebration. He and his LIV compatriots, all of them subject to the dramatic irony of having resigned themselves to play purely for money—not for history or for their respective countries—but purely for money.

After the PGA Championship, Chamblee claimed that LIV Golf was the reason why Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm ended up losing the major tournament. He expressed that the league’s format was not ideal to keep the players competitive. The duo of DeChambeau and Rahm finished as runner-ups to World No.1 Scottie Scheffler.

As for Mickelson, Chamblee has thrown several personal digs at him. He even urged for Mickelson’s removal from the World Golf Hall of Fame for his ties with LIV Golf.

Phil Mickelson expressed that the upcoming U.S. Open could be his last

The 2025 U.S. Open is now just mere days away. The third major of the event will once again feature a huge field from Oakmont. A few days ago, Phil Mickelson expressed that this could be the last time he appears in this event.

The U.S. Open is the one tournament that has eluded him in his career. He has an astonishing 6 runner-up finishes in this event. It is also the only major championship he needs to win to complete the career grand slam.

However, in the past few years, his game has gone down a bit. With him in the final year of his exemption from winning the PGA Championship in 2021, Mickelson hinted that this could be the year when he bows out from this event.

I haven’t thought about it too much. There’s a high likelihood that it will be but I haven’t really thought about it too much.

Once his exemption expires, he will need to take part in qualifying events to play in future U.S. Open events. Given his age of 54 right now, there are chances where he will simply not try to take part in this qualifying rounds.
