The NASCAR pit road can be a chaotic place. Drivers are always in a rush to make their way back to the track as soon as the pit stop is complete. This gives mechanics no room for error. Sometimes, such urgency can lead to accidents. This was the case at Pocono Raceway on Sunday, when Shane van Gisbergen‘s crew member was hit by a flying tire.

During the Stage 2 of the Cup Series race on Sunday, Shane van Gisbergen came for a regular pitstop. The Trackhouse Racing star made his way right after AJ Allmendinger stopped in the pits. Disaster struck as one tire from Allmendinger’s car flew out, hitting a mechanic from Trackhouse Racing. This was visible from the No. 16 car’s dashcam.

The No. 88 crew member who fell victim to the incident was veteran JP Kealey. He fell to the ground after the impact with the tire. Although, Kealey managed to get back up right away to ensure Shane van Gisbergen’s pitstop was completed right away.

Kaulig Racing shared a video of the incident on X. AJ Allmendinger’s team was glad to see JP back up and running right away, claiming that the crew member was quite ‘TUFF.’

Shane van Gisbergen glad to not be in F1

Shane van Gisbergen is one of the most prominent Kiwi drivers in the racing world right now. His fellow countryman Liam Lawson made waves in F1 last year at Red Bull’s sister team VCARB (Now Racing Bulls). The 23-year-old was promoted to the main team this year to partner reigning world champion Max Verstappen.

Unfortunately, this did not go well for Lawson. The 23-year-old was demoted back to Racing Bulls after just two races as he failed to even come close to Max Verstappen. Shane van Gisbergen took a clever jibe at his fellow countryman. He claimed that he was glad he was not in Lawson’s position in Formula 1.

I’m glad I didn’t drive for Red Bull F1 after how the first few rounds went.

Shane van Gisbergen said, as quoted by Newsweek.

Gisbergen has made his name in the world of NASCAR. The Trackhouse Racing star impressed the field as he won the race in Mexico, the debut round for the Cup Series in the Central American country. This has allowed the Kiwi driver to have a guaranteed spot in the Playoffs for this season, something which has divided opinions.

While NASCAR is the premiere stock car racing series in the world, it is still not a match to Formula 1 globally. F1, known as the pinnacle of motorsports enjoys a vastly larger viewer base across the world. NASCAR has enjoyed dominance within the US over the years, but this too has been challenged by F1’s ever-increasing popularity. Thus, it is not surprising to see drivers like Shane van Gisbergen make comparisons with their counterparts at the pinnacle of motorsport.
