It’s been a busy few days for ex-UFC heavyweight Jon Jones, with another criminal charge slapped on him. Right after relinquishing his undisputed heavyweight strap and hanging up his gloves, he got slammed with a misdemeanor for leaving the scene of an accident (no harm or bodily injury). Now there’s more to that.

The grit and knit of the case are a bit more salacious than that; Albuquerque, N.M., police found a half-naked woman (waist down) in the passenger seat, who claimed ‘Bones’ was driving. She even could he heard saying that they had been getting high on magic shrooms at the UFC fighter’s home.

Footage shows that the man she called over the phone (Jon Jones), and telling the PSA to “please talk to him,” was highly inebriated and threatened to kill the police. The PSA reconfirmed his intentions as a threat, and she said that’s “Jon Jones“.

[My Brother]…Sh*t…some of them are bored enough to kill you, to kill YOU! …[Yeah], Guess what? You won’t be the first guy this year that I threaten, swear to God. You’d be the second one…My brothers, they kill people for way less. If something happens to me, dude, she’s flat and dead.

A voice, arguably Jon Jones, said to PSA over the phone

Jon Jones’ litigator, Christopher Dodd, the one who helped him plead not guilty in the case of (allegedly) threatening the DFSI drug test pool agent Crystal Martinez in a Bernalillo County (N.M.) court arraignment, again came to his aid. He told Sportsnet’s Aaron Bronsteter that he’s appalled by the Albuquerque Police Department’s decision to slap a new charge.

Linking to his 2016 drag-racing violation, 2019 case of choking a waitress, 2020 DWI, 2021 domestic abuse, and a few other run-ins, Dodd feels the woman pinned Jones to a void a DUI and police “fell for it“.

Dodd labelled it a misstep that the police went as far as to get a warrant for Jones’s cell phone records, even though stemming from a mere misdemeanor vehicular infraction. Now, there are ample reasons as to why, given there’s public footage of him threatening to kill the police.

However, he considers this was ‘unwarranted’ and all other linkages other than a misdemeanor shouldn’t even be there. But, new footage from the Albuquerque Journal’s YT handle (@abqjournal) corroborates the woman’s version that the man she called when the police caught up was viciously intoxicated.

While seriously malicious, the world only has part of the story, and the police only have him on leaving the scene to charge him for now. Jones, who fell prey to claims of ‘Sex*al Act’ against a male commissioner, has a bail hearing in a Metropolitan Court on July 24th. However, this is not where the buck stops with the hate-piling on ‘Bones’.

A ‘Bones’ to pick: ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith ‘incredibly disappointed’ with Jon Jones for calling it quits

On Saturday, the UFC Heavyweight Championship was officially retired with change in guard, by the arguably greatest fighter of all time, with a title unification bout with the interim champion being avoided. As recent as UFC on ESPN 66, UFC CEO Dana White told the media scrum that Bones wasn’t ducking anyone, and more recently, he said UFC litigation agreed to the PPV compensatory finances, and it was a done deal.

However, Jon Jones made now-undisputed HW Champ Tom Aspinall go weary without title unification for 580+ days, making him the longest interim champ. Jones has come under fire for his decision to hang it up early, including labels of having ducked out on Aspinall.

Per statleaders.ufc.com, Aspinall is a nimble welterweight-like fighter who logs the least bottom position, hits like a ram, and gets out of dodge with first-round wins. So the common consensus is that Jon Jones doesn’t see this as the safe route, and coupled with his unlawful run-ins outside, it might blemish his legacy.

ESPN’s “First Take” star and ESPN panel analyst Stephen A. Smith, known for his fiery, over-animated tirades, is fired up about it all. Per Smith, Jones had to handle business and drop the ladder at his end, before calling it quits:

I’m not going to accuse the greatest mixed martial artist I’ve ever seen in my life in Jon ‘Bones’ Jones, …I have that much admiration for him… Having said that, I’m incredibly, incredibly disappointed with this news —[Jones] is absolutely phenomenal. He’s one of those dudes that a guy like Aspinall…He doesn’t even want to be asked about Tom Aspinall during interviews…My point is, if you are a fighter, which he is at a very elite level, and that’s the fight that people want to see, give us the fight that we wanna see.

Stephen A. Smith on ESPN’s “First Take”

Smith iterated the example of why UFC/MMA goes harder than boxing, where (in boxing) the rivalry is top-heavy and yet meaningless, such as to snatch a belt in the fractured four-belt culture. Everybody sports a blimp, and promoters get in the way for commission payouts. Yet, UFC had a person like Aspinall, and it made Jones’ responsibility to resolve it before quitting.

Other than his nonchalance, Jon Jones has also been highly negligent of Aspinall-related questions in the media. He avoided a sitdown with UFC on TNT Sports’ (@ufcontnt) Adam Catterall, with whom Aspinall has a new segment called UFC “Fight Lab” on YouTube. All in all, it does not bode well for his legacy anymore.
