Jannik Sinner will be heading to the Wimbledon Championship fresh off his loss to Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open final on June 8. The Italian is yet to fully bounce back from the defeat as he was unable to defend his Halle Open title. Simone Vagnozzi, one of two coaches within his team has said that the impact of the loss was tough on the Italian star.
It was not the first time that Sinner had faced Alcaraz in a final this season. They first met at the Italian Open final, which Sinner lost to Alcaraz in straight sets. But that was brushed aside a bit as the Italian star was just returning from his three-month suspension. But at the French Open, Sinner didn’t drop a set en route to the final.
However, against Alcaraz in the French Open championship match, Sinner won the first two sets before the Spaniard won the third forcing the match to a fourth set. During the fourth set, the World No.1 led 5-3 (40-0) and needed just one point to secure the title, but he failed to do so and allowed Alcaraz to win the set.
The match ended in Alcaraz favor, saving three championship points to win 4-6, 6(4)-7, 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-6 (2). It was the first Grand Slam final between the pair, one that turned out to be the longest-ever final at the Roland Garros after they played for 5 hours and 29 minutes. Also, Alcaraz extended his head-to-head record against the three-time Grand Slam winner to 8-4.
Ahead of Wimbledon, Simone Vagnozzi revealed to Ubitennis that the impact of Sinner’s loss to Alcaraz was tough. The Italian coach added that it was hard for the World No.1 to accept the defeat:
I won’t deny that it has been tough for Jannik. The defeat in Rome was softer because we had low expectations, but what happened in Paris has truly weighed on him. I can only say that now all team members have even more respect and admiration for him. Accepting the loss was hard, but the next day he had understood that…
Sinner will be looking forward to earning his revenge against Alcaraz when they meet anytime this season. The Italian has suffered at the hands of the World No.2, losing back-to-back finals in Rome and Paris. Nonetheless, before thinking of their future clash, Sinner will hope to recover fully from the loss.
Jannik Sinner’s coach says the Italian is working hard to be at best condition at Wimbledon
Jannik Sinner opened his grass-court campaign at the Terra Wortmann Open and earned just one win. The 23-year-old was the favorite to win the ATP 500 tournament but he fell short against Alexander Bublik in three sets, crashing out of the event. It was his first loss to a player other than Carlos Alcaraz since August 2024.

He has now turned his focus to the Wimbledon Championship. During the aforementioned interview, Simone Vagnozzi said that Sinner is working hard to be at the best possible condition before his opening match:
We have rented a house ten minutes’ walk from the club. Some days we have double tennis sessions, and on others, we alternate a tennis session with a gym one. I see Jannik in good shape, the initial feelings in training have been positive. He is working very hard to arrive in the best possible condition for the first match.
It is worth noting that Sinner has never gone past the semi-finals of Wimbledon. In fact, the last time the Italian star reached the last four of the Grand Slam competition was in 2023. Last year, he was knocked out by Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals.
