Stephen Curry knew his Golden State Warriors were not title contenders last season. Yet, he would have preferred if his team could at least fight to reach the NBA Finals. Now that their season is over, he has seen their loyal fans switch to support the Golden State Valkyries.

The Valkyries were the newest addition to the WNBA. They started off by promoting their upcoming debut when Curry and his teammates were battling in the 2024-25 season. That plan worked as the expansion team garnered a lot of interest.

The interest was not superficial as Chase Center was packed to the brim on opening night, and has largely been at capacity for most of the 16 games so far. In fact, their latest game against the Seattle Storm was their 10th straight sellout.

Stephen Curry was also part of those 18,064 fans watching inside Chase Center. His teammates have been at several games to support their women’s team, but this was the first appearance of the franchise’s greatest superstar.

He watched as the group of role players hustled and tormented a Storm team many felt was one of the best in the league. They had won 7 of their last 9 games and were in form. At the same time, Curry knew the women sharing the same building he made famous are also in form.

This 84-57 win happens to be their 7th out of their last 9 games. This is the best performance by any expansion team in league history, and it has come at the hands of a rookie head coach and a bunch of role players.

Stephen Curry applauded Kate Martin and the Valkyries’ hustle

Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors are one of the few teams that prefer contributions from their entire roster rather than just him and a couple of other players. He is still their most important player, but the team has won 4 NBA titles in 9 years with their team performances.

The Golden State Valkyries are primarily built with players who have warmed the bench on other teams. Their most important player is Tiffany Hayes, last season’s 6th Player of the Year. Other than that, all the players are those that the other teams did not protect before the expansion draft.

Therefore, for the likes of Kate Martin, Kayla Thornton, and Temi Fagbenle, they are driven to prove their previous employers wrong. Martin is playing much better than her replacement at the Aces and is using her role as the glue to drive her teammates.

That was evident when she was at the forefront of some hustle plays, plays that brought out cheers from Stephen Curry. He knows what a team full of driven players can do, and that is evident in the Valkyries’ position on the playoff ladder.

Valkyries’ misfits set to play 10 road games next

The Golden State Valkyries usually play lights out at home. Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever understood how the atmosphere inside Chase Center fuels this team. Now, they will not have that advantage over the next 28 days.

They first go on a road trip where they will have to play 4 games in 7 days. After a couple of games back at home and a trip to Phoenix, they get their first big break of the season during All-Star festivities. After those 9 days, they will again go on the road to play 5 games in 9 days.

This 10-game road trip will be their 1st true test of the season, as they will go up against fellow playoff contenders. If they can hold their ground and win enough games to stay put at 6th, they could wind up in the playoffs by taking care of the remaining stretch.
