The NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta this weekend was a day of mixed feelings for giants Hendrick Motorsports. Their star driver Chase Elliott won the race, secured his spot in the playoff with the help of teammate Alex Bowman, who finished P3. At the same time Kyle Larson and William Byron saw their race gets ruined by big wrecks.
The big one of the days happened towards the end of stage one in the race, while he was racing in P4. Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin spun out and caused an incident that collected 23 drivers, including the No:24 Chevy. William Byron was furious with how he lost the opportunity to fight for the race win.
In the words of Ryan Blaney, he is fed up with getting caught up in someone else’s garbage. Byron pointed out that he alongside Carson Hocevar and Kyle Larson were at a pretty string spot when the incident ruined their chances. He highlighted how it’s irrational for drivers to be that aggressive such early in the race, when there 100 of laps left in the event.
Me and Carson [Hocevar] were kind of in that mix and [Kyle] Larson as well. So yeah, it just su**s, right? Like, you’re really not that worried about getting back to the front because it’s a hundred lap stage.
William Byron said via Motorsports.com.
Then he pointed out how the drivers should be racing more respectful during the restarts and get aggressive only after everyone is fully up to the speed. The failure to do so produces such wild wrecks, and kills the entertainment. He feels like these incidents will make the elite racers seem like Truck Series drivers, in which most of them are youngsters or inexperienced.
And then we crash on the restart. You can be aggressive, like once you get kind of fully up to speed. I mean, obviously there’s jockeying on restarts always, but just try not to crash, you know? So, I dunno why we crashed the whole field trying to get up to speed. We look like a Truck Series or something.

William Byron is confused over the big wreck that took him out
In a separate interview, Byron shared more thought on the incident and admitted that there wasn’t anything he could see or do in the moment. It was Joey Logano’s car that made contact with his No:24 Chevy in the mele, and alongside him many front runners that had pitted earlier was taken out.

There wasn’t really a whole lot I could see. I was kind of catching the No. 22 [Joey Logano] with a little bit of a run. All the guys at the front had pitted during the stage break and cycled to the mid-20s.
William Byron said.
The star Chevy driver tried everything he could to avoid getting caught in the moment by going more right, but he was shoved into mess. The incident became more wild because of the fact that everyone in the track was slowly getting up to speed in the restart.
We were just running a great race in the top five. They all stacked up and at that point, I went right a little bit; the wreck was already happening and I just kind of got shoved into it. I don’t really know what was going on. We were getting up to speed and everyone was throwing a lot of blocks or something, I don’t know.
William Byron added.
The comments from the chevy driver shows he is really disappointed and hurt over how everything played out. The No:24 now should shift their focus to the next weekend’s race at Chicago Streets and tried redeem themselves with win or strong run.
