The player auction for the upcoming SA20 league got over on Tuesday (September 9), shattering some all-time records. Money was spent like never before, with a few players bagging the big bucks. The league is getting bigger year by year, and this auction was a testament to that fact.
The previous record for the highest signing in the SA20 auction was held by Tristan Stubbs. He was bought for a whopping R9.2 million, which is equivalent to INR 4.6 crore. A current gem of South African cricket in Aiden Markram and the country’s most promising youngster Dewald Brevis smashed that record aside, attracting heavy bids.
Markram received R14 Million which is equivalent to INR 7 crore. He was bought by the Durban Supergiants. Brevis further knocked that as well, earning a R16.5 million contract, which is INR 8.3 Crore. His services have been acquired by the Pretoria Capitals.
These numbers have shown the rise in spending capacity of the franchises and also the importance of quality players in the league. A total of R116.9 million (INR 59 crore) was spent on the local South African players. These big numbers also include the R22.8 million (INR 11 crore) spent on 12 U-23 players. The overall spending of the franchises amounts to a huge R129.3 million, which equals INR 65 crore during the entire auction.
Season four of this tournament promises to be bigger than ever. The first match will take place on the 26th of December with defending champions MI Cape Town taking on the Durban Supergiants.
A look at Dewald Brevis’ time with the bat in recent months
There is no second guessing why Dewald Brevis has attracted the big bucks. He has had some incredibly consistent performances in the last few months, making him a crowd and team favorite for many. He was drafted into the IPL back in 2022, which was his first big event. The youngster did show glimpses of how special a player he is, but the pressures of a big league caught up with him, derailing his performances.
Back home in South Africa, Brevis focused more on red ball cricket to get his technique in order so that he could improve as a player. The big turning point was when in IPL 2025, Brevis was drafted in as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh in the Chennai Super Kings side. He was bought for INR 2.2 crore and was straight away made a part of the playing XI.

Brevis was one of the shining lights of a dismal Chennai Super Kings 2025 campaign. The team ended last but consistent performances from Brevis took everyone by storm, making him a surety for the franchise’s future. His knock of 57 off just 23 balls against the Gujarat Titans was the highlight as he played some incredible shots all over the ground to attract praise.
Following a successful IPL stint, Brevis was given a look into the South African Test team for the Zimbabwe series. Brevis scored a decent 50 on debut and backed it up with a 30 in the second Test match. His real coming of age in international cricket came on his next tour to Australia. He was part of the T20I squad.
After a failure in the first match, Brevis came storming back to score an unbelievable 125* against the likes of Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa. He stunned the local Australians with some breathtaking strokes. He backed that up with a brilliant 53 off 26 in the last T20I, making it a special three matches for him. Brevis was a little cold in the ODIs that followed but had one good score of 49. He has had a couple of good outings in the ongoing England series as well.
Six months of such versatility in run scoring, especially in the shortest format of T20 cricket, has made Brevis attract some franchise attention big time. His stocks have risen, and many claim that he is the next big thing not only in South African cricket but World cricket in general.
