In Short
  • Anthony Edwards returned from a knee injury to score 18 points in 25 minutes, helping the Timberwolves win Game 1 against the Spurs.
  • Despite his performance, Edwards expressed disappointment in himself for mistakes made in the final minutes of the game.
  • Wolves guard Mike Conley praised Edwards for his quick recovery and impact on the team's success.

It was a huge surprise to the NBA world when Anthony Edwards was cleared to play in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the San Antonio Spurs. Edwards had suffered a knee injury against the Denver Nuggets in Game 4 of the first round.

After his injury, it was reported that the Wolves star would be sidelined for multiple weeks. However, he was able to make a remarkable recovery and was under a minute restriction as he came off the bench on Monday night.

His return proved to be a huge boost for the Wolves as he helped his side take a closely fought 104-102 victory over the Spurs at the Frost Bank Center. It was an important win as the Wolves have now stolen home-court advantage from the Spurs.

After the win, Edwards expressed disappointment with his performance, especially during the final two minutes of the game.

I’m disappointed in myself. For me, man, 75% of the game is my mind. My mind’s got to be where it needs to be, and in the last two minutes of the game, it wasn’t. I gave up two offensive rebounds, turned the ball over… but yeah, I’ll be better.

With injuries to Donte DiVincenzo and Ayo Dosunmu, the Wolves were desperately in need of a scorer like Anthony Edwards. He ended his night with 18 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists in a little over 25 minutes of playing time.

Edwards was able to feature in just four games against the Nuggets in the first round. It was a hard-fought and physical tie as the series went to six games. The Wolves came out on top despite Edwards missing Games 5 and 6.

Mike Conley calls Anthony Edwards his hero

It was expected that Anthony Edwards would make his return in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals at best. However, he was able to take the court in under ten days. In his absence, the Wolves had little to no chance against a Spurs side led by Victor Wembanyama.

After the game, Wolves guard Mike Conley heaped praise on the 24-year-old.

I called him my hero before the game. This is like something to look up to somebody for what he just put himself through in the last week, just to get read for Game 1. I mean, nobody expected him to play… It just showed a lot.

Edwards has often been compared to the likes of Michael Jordan, not just for his style of play but also for competitiveness and mentality. He was recovering from a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise, which had been hindering him since the end of the regular season.

Anthony Edwards is a blessing to have on the court

After taking the Wolves to consecutive Western Conference Finals in 2024 and 2025, Anthony Edwards has cemented himself as one of the best players in the NBA today. During the offseason, he took some advice from Jordan on how to improve his game against double and triple teams, which shows his willingness to keep getting better.

Wolves forward Jaden McDaniels was in awe of Edwards and how his teammate was able to get back on court to help them.

It’s just amazing how hard he works… It’s just a blessing to have him on the court. Even if he’s doing little stuff, he carries so much gravity, so it opens up for all of us.

Edwards has gone through multiple treatments over the last week. He has undergone hyperbaric chamber sessions to recover ahead of schedule. With an important win on the road, the Wolves will be looking to stamp their authority in this series in Game on Wednesday night.
