In Short
  • Jarren Duran deleted his Instagram following a fallout with NBC Sports Boston analyst Michael Holley.
  • Holley criticized teammate Roman Anthony, calling him one of the worst flops in Red Sox history.
  • Duran's performance has declined, and he faces scrutiny amid the team's struggles and his off-field behavior.

The Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran wiped out his Instagram days after his explosive fallout with NBC Sports Boston’s Michael Holley. Duran took offense to Holley’s comments about teammate Roman Anthony, where the analyst claimed Anthony was the worst flop in the team’s history and accused the franchise of lying about Anthony’s injury.

The Boston Red Sox are at the bottom of the AL East with a 17-23 record. Roman Anthony is one of their worst-performing athletes this season, and he was placed on a ten-day Injury List after reportedly suffering a sprain in his right hand. Holley called the bluff on it, stating that he “Understand(s) why all teams do it, but let’s just be honest. All teams lie. They lie about injuries, they just do.”

Holley’s comments didn’t sit well with Duran. He posted it to his Instagram Stories to call Holley a clown and question the channel for hiring people like Holley. “They let people like this on NBC Sports,” Duran captioned a clip of Holley’s rant with a clown and a laughing emoji going along with the captions.

However, Duran’s Instagram account seems to be missing now. It appears to be deleted, with the link to his page carrying the words that the account is unavailable.

Anthony, 21, playing in his second year in the majors, has had a tough time on the plate this season. He has just hit .229 in 30 games this year. Meanwhile, Duran might be having a much tougher time, being a seasoned player compared to Anthony. He’s slashing .194/.253/.324 since the season started.

Jarren Duran’s time in Boston under threat amid slow start

The Californian Wareham alum, Jarren Duran, is on the chopping block at the Boston Red Sox as the team looks to drift away from the crumbling losses. The 29-year-old had a particularly slow start to the season after a sensational top 10 MVP finish just a couple of years ago in the 2024-25 season and had massive value on the market.

His market value has since gone down. The Red Sox may have missed their best time to initiate a trade. Nonetheless, there are several other factors playing into the Red Sox’s advantage at the time. They have restricted Duran to Left Field (LF) and Designated Hitter (DH) duties when he could be utilized well as a center fielder. There are certain teams that need a defensive asset, and Duran could be their answer.

The Red Sox are also wary of his off-the-field behavior. As a normal netizen, wiping their Instagram or deleting all posts may be a normal and unproblematic thing, but with an athlete on a major team, that’s endorsement deals, values tanking, and a behavior that strays from their team’s brand value.

Also, Duran has similarly landed in trouble in 2024 when he used a homophobic slur on a heckler. He later apologized and was banned from two games by the franchise. MLB decided to donate the salary of its suspended games to Greater PFLAG Boston.

Amidst the fresh wave of controversy, the Red Sox could consider this a perfect time. While his value is not at the peak, they do have a surplus of outfielders, four of them being part of the team for a year now.
