Fernando Tatis Jr. is going through a rough patch in the 2026 season. On Friday, the San Diego Padres star made a huge defensive error that led to a Little League grand slam for the St. Louis Cardinals in their 6-0 victory.

Tatis Jr. was playing in the right field position in this game, a day after he played at the 2nd base position. The Dominican International was back in the position where he won 2 Gold Gloves and 1 Platinum Glove.

The game between the two sides remained scoreless after 4 innings. It was the 5th inning where things went wrong for him and his team.

Starting pitcher Griffin Canning gave up back-to-back singles to Masyn Winn and Nathan Church to open the inning. After striking out Cesas Prieto, the pitcher gave up a walk to Victor Scott II, which loaded up the bases.

JJ Wetherholt then hit a single on a ground ball towards Tatis Jr. in the right field. As Winn took off from third to home plate, Tatis Jr. reached down low with his glove to collect the ball. Unfortunately for him, he failed to gather the ball as it trickled away all the way towards the wall.

The Padres star would then go all the way to collect the ball and relay it back to home plate. He was a bit slow in this as Church, Scott II, and Wetherholt all scored to clear the bases. Wetherholt thus ended up hitting a Little League grand slam.

The Cardinals loaded up the bases again through a single from Ivan Herrera, a double from Alec Burleson, and a Jordan Walker walk. Canning was then replaced by the Padres by Yuki Matsui.

There was no grand slam this time as Nolan Gorman‘s single to right field was fielded perfectly. They did bring in another run to make it a 5-0 game. Winn then extended the lead to 6-0 through a sacrifice fly.

This 6-run spot turned out to be a major blow for the Padres. The team was unable to add any runs and ended up suffering a 6-0 loss. Tatis Jr. went 0-for-2 in this game with one walk.

Fans on social media were left stunned by this. While some made wild jokes, some were left concerned for him. A few of them even questioned why he did not rush for the ball. One user wrote, “So much for that Platinum Glove,” while reacting to this development.

Another major concern for Tatis Jr. this season is his performance with the bat. While he has batted with a .248 average in 37 games and has 13 RBIs, he has not hit a single home run yet. If the team is to make a strong push for the title, they will need him firing from the plate.

Before the Mexico City series against the Arizona Diamondbacks last week, the player expressed that he had no idea what was happening with him. This slump brought out an NSFW reaction out of him.

I don’t know what the f*** is going on. But, man, just keep going out there and keep grinding.

Fernando Tatis Jr. said as per Dennis Lin of The Athletic

Tatis Jr.’s last home run came during the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) while he represented the Dominican Republic. Since that tournament, he has yet to leave the yard this season.

Last year, he hit 25 home runs in 155 games for the San Diego Padres. This marked a 4th straight season where he had hit 20 or more home runs.

Despite his struggles, the team has done well. The Padres sit 2nd in the NL West division with a 22-16 record following their loss on Friday.
