Anthony Volpe is going down. On Sunday, the New York Yankees opted the shortstop to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while backing Jose Caballero in the infield role for the foreseeable future.

The 25-year-old is yet to play for the Bronx Bombers this season. He underwent surgery on his left shoulder in October last year following a serious injury. With him unavailable for selection, Caballero was entrusted with the shortstop role.

The 2023 Gold Glove winner was playing in the minor leagues on his rehab assignment and seemed to be on his way back to the team. However, now the team has opted to keep him in the Triple-A and let Caballero play as the everyday shortstop.

This development comes at a time when Caballero has been in fine form. Before the game against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, the 29-year-old was batting with a .333 average in his last 16 games. He had 3 home runs and 5 RBIs across this run.

Apart from that, he was strong defensively as well. He recorded a +1 out above average, which led to the Yankees backing him and choosing to go with him as the shortstop instead of replacing him with Volpe.

The defense has been a major concern for Volpe. The Manhattan-born star has struggled defensively in recent years and made some big errors, which have caused the team. He had a -6 outs above average last season, leading to many criticizing him.

Offensively, Volpe had a slash line of .212/.272/.391 with 19 home runs and 72 RBIs last season. His batting average of .212, though, was the lowest of his career.

Speaking of the Yankees, they took down the Orioles 11-3 to improve their record to 23-11 for the season. A win on Monday would see them complete a 4-game sweep of their division rivals, who are struggling at the moment with a 15-19 record.

Aaron Boone declines a position change for Anthony Volpe after optioning him to the minor leagues

The New York Yankees have decided not to make any changes to a winning team and thus opted Anthony Volpe to the minor league. When asked whether there would be a position change for him, manager Aaron Boone declined that.

At the moment, the Yankees have top prospect George Lombard Jr., playing as the shortstop in Triple-A. With Volpe now being there, some were left questioning whether he will switch positions.

However, according to Boone, Volpe will remain a shortstop. He will not play at any other position as the team wants him ready as a shortstop.

No, he’s getting ready to play shortstop.

Aaron Boone said regarding Anthony Volpe as per Chris Kirschner

Earlier this year, the team had demoted Jasson Dominguez to the minor league. However, after Giancarlo Stanton got injured, he was called back up. Volpe could have a similar fate and earn a call-up in the future.
