The New York Mets have been poor this season. The National League East side is 9 games behind the .500 winning percentage and already looks out of the postseason race. On Tuesday, a WFAN Sports Radio host blasted the team’s president of baseball operations, David Stearns, and called him out.

The Mets, who have a payroll of over $300 million, are once again struggling this season. After a 7-4 start, the team suffered a major collapse and dropped 12 games in a row, their longest losing streak since the 2002 season.

While the team ended this barren run with 2 successive wins over the Minnesota Twins, the Colorado Rockies proceeded to deliver a big punch. The Denver-based side, who finished with a poor 43-119 record last season, swept the Mets in a 3-game set.

The Mets thus tied the Philadelphia Phillies for the worst record in the league at 9-19, already 10.5 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves. All of this led to several questions regarding Stearns’ leadership, with fans demanding a change and the removal of manager Carlos Mendoza.

Before the game on Tuesday, Tiki Barber went off at Stearns. The WFAN Sports Radio host criticized the work of Stearns while taking shots at the decisions made by him during the offseason last year.

I think he’s done a horrendous job, horrendous. He was talking BS to us at the end of regular season last year saying we need to focus on run prevention. … You’ve sold me a bill of goods. You lied to my damn face and expected me to just trust you. So I don’t trust David Stearns.

Tiki Barber said regarding David Stearns on WFAN Sports Radio

Last offseason saw some big changes at the Mets. Stars Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz opted out of their deals and did not re-sign with the team. The team also traded the likes of Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo.

They did bring in Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco. However, the two of them have been unable to make a massive impact so far.

The Mets did win on Monday. A shutout 8-0 win over the Washington Nationals saw their record go to 10-19 for the year. With the 8 runs from this game, the team finally reached the 100-run mark for the season.

Juan Soto had defended David Stearns after Rockies swept the Mets

David Stearns has found his name in several discussions amid the poor start of the New York Mets this year. 4-time All-Star Juan Soto came to the defense of Stearns after the team got swept by the Colorado Rockies.

On Sunday, the Rockies delivered a major double blow as they won both games of the doubleheaders. A 3-1 win was followed by a 3-0 win in the second game. The Rockies limited the Mets to just 4 runs across the 3 games at Citi Field.

While speaking with the reporters after the game, Soto claimed that Stearns or Mendoza were not to be blamed for the form of the team. He instead pointed fingers at the players and expressed that they needed to go out there and perform.

This is not Mendy’s (Carlos Mendoza) fault or David’s (Stearns) fault. They put a great team together. We have to be the ones that will go out there and perform.

These words came from Soto after he had just returned to the team after a right calf strain. He had been sidelined from April 3 and returned to action last Tuesday in his side’s 3-2 win, which ended a 12-game losing run.

The 27-year-old has been one of the top performers of the team this season. In 14 games, he has batted with a .300 average with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs. A victory on Wednesday against the Nationals would seal the team’s 4th series win of the year.
