The New York Mets have finally won again. On Wednesday, the team claimed their first win in over 2 weeks as they took down the Minnesota Twins 3-2 at Citi Field. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani later took to his X account and dropped a 1-word reaction as the team snapped a 12-game losing run.

The day before this game, the National League East side lost its 12th straight game, marking their longest losing streak since 2002. They blew a 3-0 lead on Wednesday and imploded in the 9th inning as closing pitcher Devin Williams once again struggled from the mound.

The ex-Yankees star gave up 3 walks, a sacrifice bunt, a single, and 2 runs, and failed to record an out. Austin Warren, who came on to replace him, then struck out the side and escaped the jam.

With 12 losses in a row, the Mets were desperate for a positive result. On Wednesday, they once again took an early lead through Francisco Lindor as the shortstop hit a single in the bottom of the first inning to score Bo Bichette.

After a sacrifice fly from Victor Cartini tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the 4th inning, Francisco Alvarez restored the Mets’ lead with a double in the next frame. Byron Buxton then delivered another huge blow to the home side with a solo home run in the 6th inning, which leveled the scores at 2-2.

It was in the 8th inning when the Mets regained the lead. A single on a fly ball from Mark Vientos saw Brett Baty come from third base to home plate and score. Relief pitcher Luke Weaver would then see out the win and get the team back in the win column.

After the win, NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani took to his X account to celebrate the win. While reposting a tweet of the Mets, the 34-year-old dropped a 1-word reaction.

Mamdani had found his name among jokes and trolls during the team’s losing run. Fans on social media started calling it the “Curse of the Mambino as they went on a poor run of form after the mayor posed for photos with Mr. and Mrs. Mets, the team’s mascots.

While speaking with the reporters on Tuesday, the mayor jokingly embraced the nickname “Mayor Mambino” as some pointed fingers at him for the losing streak.

There’s a lot of baseball to be played. I’m still keeping the faith as I know that many Mets fans are across the city. Though I will accept being addressed as ‘Mayor Mambino’ for the day.

The Queens-based side, though, did suffer some blows in this game. While Juan Soto returned to the lineup, Lindor was removed from the game due to left calf tightness. He is now set to undergo an MRI scan and could be sidelined for a while.

WWE star takes credit for Mets’ win after barren 12-game losing streak

As jokes about a “curse” on the Mets started trending on social media, WWE superstar Danhausen found himself in the mix. The comedy character is known for putting curses on people.

After 7 straight losses, a former WWE writer, Brian Gewirtz, who is a Mets fan, urged the superstar to “uncurse” his team in exchange for putting his (Danhausen) face on the production truck. The former AEW star would agree to it.

The team still kept dropping games. A week after this interaction, the 12-game losing streak finally ended. While reacting to this, Danhausen took the credit for the win.
