“Something Needs to Change,” HOF Pedro Martinez Drops Blunt Take Regarding Mets’ Poor Form Following 12th Consecutive Defeat

The New York Mets need some positivity right now. On Tuesday, the National League East team suffered their 12th consecutive defeat. MLB Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez dropped a blunt take and expressed that “something needs to change” for them.
The Mets, who were 7-4 after beating the Arizona Diamondbacks two weeks ago, have suffered a major collapse. This past Sunday, the team got swept in a 3rd successive series as their loss streak extended to 11 games.
After a day off on Monday, the team took on the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. In front of their home fans at Citi Field, the Queens-based side took a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning through Francisco Lindor. It was just the 2nd home run of the season for the 5-time MLB All-Star.
Up until the 6th inning, things were in their control. Pitcher Nolan McLean was perfect after 5 innings and carried a perfect game into the 6th. His bid for a perfecto came to an end in this inning through a single from Matt Wallner.
Later in the inning, the 24-year-old conceded a 2-run home run to Byron Buxton. In the 7th inning, the Twins tied the game at 3-3 through a single from Luke Keaschall. McLean ended his day by throwing 99 pitches in 6.2 innings and picking up 10 strikeouts.

It was in the 9th inning when the team imploded again. After 1.1 scoreless innings from Huascar Brazoban, manager Carlos Mendoza handed the pitch to Devin Williams. In his previous outing, the pitcher had given up a game-tying double in the bottom of the 9th inning to Michael Conforto against the Chicago Cubs.
The ex-New York Yankees star struggled once again. He gave up 2 straight walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a single that gave the Twins the lead. He then gave up a bases-loaded walk to Wallner, which extended the lead to 5-3.
The pitcher failed to record a single out and exited the field to loud boos. Austin Warren would then escape the jam by picking up 3 strikeouts.

The Mets ended up losing 5-3, extending their losing streak to 12. While discussing the team after the game, former Boston Red Sox star Pedro Martinez urged that the 2-time World Series winners needed to do something fast.
The Mets, as an organization right now, need to make a statement. I’m not asking for anybody’s head, but something needs to change right now. It’s either you dump, or you load yourself again, or something needs to be done.

This is the Mets’ longest losing run since 2002. That year, they lost 12 on the bounce in August and finished the season with a 75-86 record, 26.5 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves.
Mets staring at possible chances of missing playoffs for 2nd straight season after 12 successive losses
The New York Mets keep spiraling down at the moment. Their 12 successive losses have led them to stare at the possibility of missing the playoffs for a 2nd straight season.

Last year, the Mets started strong and even had the best record in the league at one stage at 45-24. However, they stumbled in the final 3 months and went on to miss the playoffs on the final day of the season following a 4-0 loss against the Miami Marlins.
A star-studded lineup spearheaded by the $765 million signing of Juan Soto finished with an 83-79 record and failed to make it to the postseason. With how things are going right now, they face the possibility of facing this disappointment once again.
In MLB history, no team has made it to the playoffs after losing 12 games in a row in the regular season. With the loss on Tuesday, the Mets were left with a 7-16 record, the worst record in the league.

The Mets, however, can take inspiration from the Cleveland Guardians. Last year, the AL Central side lost 10 games in a row from late June to early July. Despite that, the Guardians made it to the playoffs by going on a 10-game winning run in September towards the end of the year.
The Mets have lost two more games than the Guardians. However, unlike them, they have plenty of games left to turn their season around. It will, though, require a major push from the top players. As of now, there are 8.5 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East division standings.
