On Tuesday, the New York Mets ended up losing once again. The team suffered its 12th straight defeat as relief pitcher Devin Williams gave up 2 runs in the 9th inning. Following the game, Mets fans on social media aimed at Williams.

The Mets started well on Tuesday. A 3-run home run from Francisco Lindor in the bottom of the 3rd inning to put his side 3-0 up. It was just his 2nd home run of the season.

Meanwhile, pitcher Nolan McLean seemed to be flirting with a perfect game. The 24-year-old threw five scoreless innings and dominated the opposition batters.

In the 6th inning, his bid for a perfect game was ended by a single from Matt Wallner. After recording two outs in this inning, the pitcher gave up a 2-run home run to Byron Buxton, which cut the Twins’ deficit to 1 run.

A Luke Keaschall single in the 7th inning tied the game at 3-3. McLean ended his day by pitching 6.2 innings and picking up 10 strikeouts.

After Huascar Brazoban gave the Mets 1.1 scoreless innings, he was replaced by Devin Williams at the start of the 9th inning. The closing pitcher, who gave up the game-tying run to Michael Conforto on Sunday, was given the responsibility to keep the game level by manager Carlos Mendoza.

This move, however, backfired for the team. Williams gave up 2 straight walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a single, which saw the Twins take a 4-3 lead. He then gave up a bases-loaded walk to Wallner, which made it a 5-3 game.

Boos rained down on Citi Field after this. The 2-time All-Star failed to record a single out and was replaced by Austin Warren.

To make matters worse for Williams, Warren was able to escape the jam without surrendering another run and striking out the side. The pitcher struck out Royce Lewis, Brooks Lee, and Bryon Buxton to keep the game at 5-3.

The Mets were unable to come back from this late setback and were handed their 12th consecutive defeat. Williams was the one credited with the loss in this game. The 31-year-old has a 9.91 ERA across 8 games this season.

Williams, who was signed after Edwin Diaz opted out of his deal in the offseason last year, has yet to make a huge impact on the Mets. He joined the team after a struggling season with the New York Yankees in the Bronx.

In 2025, the ex-Yankees star went 4-6 in 67 games while having a 4.79 ERA. He gave up several runs and had faced difficulties from the mound while donning the Yankees pinstripes. The pitcher is once again having a tough time while coming out of the bullpen this year.

It’s tough. I don’t know, I’ve never been a part of something like this.

Devin Williams said as per SNY

One positive thing for the Mets is that they will have Juan Soto back in the lineup on Wednesday. The outfielder has been out of action since sustaining a right calf strain on April 3. His return could give the struggling offense a massive boost.
