Things are going from bad to worse for the New York Mets in the 2026 season. On Friday, the team suffered its 9th successive loss following a 12-4 defeat against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. The Mets fanbase on social media was left shaking their heads after the game.
The National League East side, who had a season to forget in 2025, were hoping to bounce back strongly in the 2026 edition. After taking down the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opening series, they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-game bout.
Following a 7-2 loss against the San Francisco Giants in the series opener against the NL West team, the team won 3 straight to win the series. A 4-3 walkoff win over the Arizona Diamondbacks gave them a 7-4 record for the season and made it 4 wins in a row.
Since then, the Mets have not won a single game. They lost the series against the D-backs, losing 7-2 and 7-1 in the next two games. After that, they got swept by the Athletics.
The A’s dominated the Queens-based side and outscored them 16-6 in the 3-game series. They even recorded 2 shoutouts.
The Los Angeles Dodgers then continued their dominant run. The reigning champions also swept the Mets, outscoring them 14-3. With 8 straight losses, the team headed to Chicago on Friday, hoping to put an end to this barren run.
However, there was no relief for them once again. In the first inning itself, they found themselves 4-0 down as starter Kodai Senga gave up a 3-run home run to Moises Ballesteros.
The Mets did fight back and put up 3 runs in the top of the 2nd inning through a double from Marcus Semien and Tyrone Taylor. Senga then gave up a 2-run home run to Nico Hoerner in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Nico Hoerner's turn 💪

This is the Mets’ worst skid in MLB in over 2 decades. They lost 11 games in a row in 2004 and went on to finish with a 71-91 record, 24 games behind first-place Atlanta Braves. At the moment, they are 7-13, 6 games behind the Braves.
Mets fans left angry following team’s 9th straight defeat
The New York Mets were on the losing end once again on Friday as they conceded 12 runs against the Chicago Cubs. This defeat meant that the team had now lost 9 straight games, their worst run in form in over 2 decades.

Mets fans on social media would lose it as their team suffered another disappointment. There were several calls against the team management as many urged for a change. One user wrote, “season dead in April,” following this loss.

This is without a doubt the most disgusting, embarrassing, disgraceful team I have ever watched

FIRE STEARNS AND MENBLOZA
Perhaps it’s over exaggeration to anoint a season dead in April, but not for individual players. Senga is toast. His ghost fork pitch was fun for the 1-2 season it lasted. Get this guy out of here. We got guys in Triple A that would be way more competitive.

Just when we thought they couldn’t be any more pathetic! Every single piece of this team is pathetic. Every. Single. Piece.

7-13 probably won’t be at .500 the rest of 2026. Congrats on ending your season before May. Citi Field will be a ghost town.

One of the major pieces missing from the Mets lineup is Juan Soto. The 4-time MLB All-Star has been sidelined with a right calf strain since April 3. In his absence, the team’s offense has struggled.
Mets GM David Stearns admits team’s offense has struggled in 2026
One of the major reasons for the New York Mets‘ current skid is their offense. Their bats have gone cold at the start of the 2026 season. General Manager David Stearns admitted that the team is struggling to hit following their 9th successive loss.

Before the game on Friday, the team had a .175/.213/.257 slash line. Though they did have 14 hits in the series opener against the Cubs, they were unable to make the most out of it. The Cubs, on the other hand, also had 14 hits.
We haven’t hit. And when you don’t hit, you can look stagnant.
David Stearns said as per Jackson Stone of MLB.com
The Mets are currently ranked 23rd in the MLB standings in batting average at .223 after 20 games. They have only hit 14 home runs, the 3rd worst record in the league, just behind the Boston Red Sox and the San Francisco Giants, who have both hit just 12 home runs.
After this series against the Cubs, the Mets will have a 6-game homestand against the Minnesota Twins and the Colorado Rockies. They will be hoping to return home with a positive record and end this losing run.
