The Philadelphia Phillies are going through a rough patch at the moment. Amidst this, there have been questions regarding the team’s leadership. On Tuesday, team president Dave Dombrowski found himself in hot water after he deflected a question regarding the front office.

Earlier on Tuesday, the team fired manager Rob Thomson. The veteran was given the role in 2022 and led the team to the World Series in his first season. He went on to guide the Phillies to the playoffs in each of his next three seasons.

However, things were not going well this year. After losing 10 games in a row, the 2-time World Series winners were left with a 9-18 record. While they did end this losing streak with an 8-5 win on Saturday, they lost again on Sunday and were 9-19 after 28 games.

Considering the fact that the Phillies have a payroll of over $300 million, this was not a good showing. Dombrowski would call Thomson earlier in the day and later relieve him of his duties. Don Mattingly was named as the interim manager.

Last week, Dombrowski claimed that he was not looking for a change. Despite this team being on a losing run, the 69-year-old claimed that he was not worried.

I’m not worried about the hole.

Dave Dombrowski said last week as per Casey Drottar of MLB.com

During the press conference on Tuesday, Dombrowski was asked a huge question regarding the team’s front office by Tim Kelly. The reporter brought up the shortcomings of the team and asked Dombrowski why the Phillies fans should still believe that he was the right person for the job.

The Phillies president then refused to answer the question. He simply urged that he (Kelly) could answer that question.

You can answer that question. I am not gonna get into that.

Dave Dombrowski said

Dombrowski, who previously served as the general manager of the Montreal Expos, the Miami Marlins, and the Detroit Tigers and as the president of baseball operations of the Boston Red Sox, joined the Phillies in December 2020.

After missing the postseason in his first season, he has guided the team to 4 playoff berths. Overall, he has 15 playoff appearances, 5 pennants, and 2 World Series titles in his name.

Dave Dombrowski faces heat from Phillies fans after deflecting question over his leadership qualities

On Tuesday, Dave Dombrowski made a big decision and fired manager Rob Thomson following their poor start to the season. The Phillies’ president of baseball operations then found himself under the heat after he deflected a question over his leadership qualities.

Him refusing to answer that question led to Phillies fans slamming him. Many urged his removal. Meanwhile, one user wrote, “This guy is a fraud,” while making their feelings known.

The Phillies did win on Tuesday. A dominant performance saw them shutout the San Francisco Giants and pick up a 7-0 victory in the first game under the charge of interim manager Don Mattingly.

Dave Dombrowski claims he called Alex Cora after his dismissal by Red Sox

On Saturday, the Boston Red Sox dismissed longtime manager Alex Cora despite his team winning 17-1 against the Baltimore Orioles. After this, he was called by Dave Dombrowski about a managerial position for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Just like the Phillies, the Red Sox have not enjoyed a good start to the 2026 campaign. Following a 10-3 loss against the Orioles in the series opener, they were left with a 9-17 record.

The team bounced back from this loss with a thumping 17-1 win. However, that win was not enough to save Cora’s job, as he was fired soon after that win.

Dombrowski, who had worked with Cora on the Red Sox, claimed he had spoken with the 50-year-old about the managerial position. He revealed that Cora initially called him on Saturday to inform him (Dombrowski) that he had been removed from his position.

I talked to him on Sunday morning. We talked about potentially taking the (manager) job.

Dave Dombrowski said as per Gabrielle Starr of Boston Herald

Cora, however, turned down the offer and expressed that he wanted to spend some time with his family. Under interim manager Chad Tracy, the Red Sox are 2-1 in 3 games, leaving them at 12-18 for the season after 30 games.
