Jannik Sinner vs. Andrey Rublev: Match Preview

Jannik Sinner has been in mind-blowing form since March. After kicking off the season with a semi-final and quarter-finals finish at the Australian Open and Qatar Open. He claimed the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open (completing the Sunshine Double) before winning his first clay title in nearly four years at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Sinner won the Madrid Open before arriving in Rome for the Italian Open. It was his fifth consecutive Masters 1000 title on tour. He’s yet to drop a set at the Rome Masters and has defeated Sebastian Ofner, Alexei Popyrin, and Andrea Pellegrino to earn his place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

On the other hand, Andrey Rublev has struggled with form on tour. His best run before the clay season came at the Hong Kong Open, Qatar Open, and the Dubai Tennis Championships. He reached the semi-finals in all three tournaments and was very close to making his first championship match of the year.

At the Barcelona Open, he reached his first final but couldn’t get past Arthur Fils to win the title. In Madrid, he crashed out in the second round but immediately found his rhythm at the Italian Open. He defeated Miomir Kecmanović 6-4, 6-4 before overcoming Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4, 6-4. He then defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in three sets.

Sinner is currently at the peak of his powers on tour. Full of confidence and in his best rhythm, Sinner has been ruthless on the court. With only two sets dropped since March, he has not given any of his opponents a breathing space. Known for his rigid style of play and simple approach, some of his critics have said his matches are becoming less enjoyable.

At the Madrid Open final, he crushed Alexander Zverev in 56 minutes, less time than the women’s final took. However, Rublev cannot be underestimated on tour. He might not be at his best right now, but he sometimes produces magical displays and could be a dangerous opponent if taken lightly. He will try to push Sinner hard, while knowing he had to be calm until the end, to get something from the tie.

Match Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
