In Short
  • Jannik Sinner won the Italian Open, becoming the youngest man to complete the Career Golden Masters.
  • He is on a 34-match winning streak in Masters 1000s, surpassing Djokovic's previous record.
  • Fans expressed concern over Sinner's seemingly swollen ankles following his victory, sparking discussions about potential causes.

Jannik Sinner is finally enjoying some time away from the tennis courts after accomplishing a great deal of things since the Indian Wells Masters. He has already made it clear that he would not be focusing on anything related to tennis and would rather spend some quality time with his parents.

On Sunday (May 17th), Sinner secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Casper Ruud in the Italian Open final, and this made him the youngest man to complete the Career Golden Masters as well as the second man, after Novak Djokovic, to achieve this feat. The 24-year-old is also now the first man to win six consecutive Masters 1000s as well as the first man to win the first five Masters 1000s of the season.

He is on a 34-match winning streak in Masters 1000s, previously surpassing Djokovic’s all-time record of 31 back-to-back match wins. After losing the Australian Open final to eventual runner-up Djokovic, Sinner suffered a shock quarterfinal exit at the Qatar Open.

And after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells final, the Italian ace became the eighth man to complete the Sunshine Double by beating Jiri Lehecka in the Miami Open final. Sinner reclaimed his No.1 ranking by stopping Carlos Alcaraz from defending his Monte Carlo title. In Madrid, he dismantled Alexander Zverev, registering his ninth consecutive win over the German.

Following his Italian Open victory, Sinner has become the second man, after 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, to win the three clay-court Masters 1000s in the same season. Next is Roland Garros, which starts on Sunday (May 24).

Sinner will script history there as well if he wins because the title will make him the seventh man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam. After his Rome win, a picture of his ankles sparked discussions.

Fans react to the seemingly swollen ankles of Jannik Sinner

On X, journalist Jose Moron shared a picture of Jannik Sinner’s ankle, which seemed swollen. Fans are left wondering whether this happened because of playing too much tennis. But some said Sinner might have been wearing an ankle brace, while others said Sinner probably did not wear the shoes properly, and that it could have happened because of skiing. Well, some brought up his doping scandal again.

Jannik Sinner on winning the Italian Open in front of Adriano Panatta and Sergio Mattarella

Former ATP player Adriano Panatta and Italian President Sergio Mattarella were at Foro Italico during Sinner’s final match versus Ruud. Panatta, in fact, handed the trophy to the youngster. Later, during his interview with Che Tempo Che Fa, Sinner made his feelings about winning the title in front of them known.

Adriano was really nice. I don’t know him very well; we only exchanged a few words, but it was nice. He told me he’ll be coming to Paris too, and I hope to see him there too, and maybe get to know him a little better without so many spectators around. President Mattarella is also really nice, but I didn’t get off to a great start with my speech (laughs). I’m always very excited in front of him; talking to him is incredible, especially because he loves sports.
