In Short
  • Dustin Poirier criticized Nate Diaz's performance in his recent loss to Mike Perry, calling it lackluster.
  • Poirier expressed uncertainty about wanting to fight Diaz again, citing the latter's poor showing.
  • Despite being retired, Poirier indicated he would consider a welterweight fight against Diaz if the opportunity arose.

Dustin Poirier harshly criticized Nate Diaz after the latter’s lopsided loss against Mike Perry last weekend. The Bareknuckle FC fighter dispatched Diaz quite effortlessly, forcing a doctor’s stoppage at the end of the second round. Following this abysmal showing from Diaz, Poirier revealed he wasn’t even sure if he wants to fight his longtime rival.

Poirier and Diaz have chirped at each other over a fight for quite some time now. The pair was officially scheduled to fight in November 2018 at UFC 230. However, that fight ended up falling through, with the fighters going back-and-forth over the exact reason to this day.

On the Deep Waters podcast on Paramount, Poirier said that he wished Nate Diaz would come clean about why their fight fell through. Then the ‘Diamond’ explained that a fight with him now was less appealing. He pointed to the 41-year-old’s performance on Saturday as the cause.

Dude, after the way he looked on Saturday night, he can’t talk right now, man. You need to take a break. He needs to go get some sleep and some rest, not me… He looked horrible. He looked like he didn’t want to be in there, looked like a punching bag. He looked off balance. His timing was horrible.

Poirier did say that while he goes easy on fighters who lose, Diaz was an exception. The former interim lightweight champion lambasted the younger Diaz brother for calling him out after his performance on Saturday. He labelled a fight against the 41-year-old as “picking” an easy fight, vowing to knock him out.

That said, Poirier did reveal that he would gladly take a fight against Nate Diaz. However, as things stand, he is retired. But the former UFC lightweight revealed how he could be persuaded to return to the octagon.

Dustin Poirier reveals desire for Nate Diaz fight at new weight class

After wrapping up his fighting career at UFC 318, Dustin Poirier has been enjoying his life as a retired fighter. He has a new gig with the UFC as an analyst and even posts updates of himself with his newborn son. Despite being happily retired, Poirier has kept some rivalries alive, including his longstanding rivalry with Nate Diaz.

The Diamond even once revealed that he would end his retirement for a fight against him. Now, following the MVP card on Netflix, the ex-UFC title challenger still wants to face the Stockton native. Despite a poor showing from Diaz, the 37-year-old confessed on the Deep Waters podcast that he would take a fight against his longtime rival at welterweight.

My invitation is still out there at 170lbs. I will go back into the drug testing pool. I will knock Nate Diaz completely out.

Before his retirement, Dustin Poirier revealed his plans to get “jacked and tan.” He alluded to the absence of a weight cut and drug tests, enabling that lifestyle change. The Diamond also pointed to that as the reason why a return at the White House card wouldn’t have been possible. However, it seems Poirier is ready to take the necessary steps to facilitate a fight against the Stockton Slugger.

Nate Diaz had earlier claimed that the UFC had contacted him for a potential fight. He revealed this in an interview with Ariel Helwani. The Stockton native mentioned Charles Oliviera as his preferred opponent in that interview, while revealing that the UFC insinuated an offer to fight Conor McGregor.

Nonetheless, Diaz is a free agent once again after the conclusion of the Mike Perry fight. He could sign with the UFC in chasing a Poirier fight. After all, Dustin Poirier had revealed that fighting elsewhere was not possible at the moment since he was still under his UFC contract. This is the case for all UFC fighters who retire with fights left on their contracts.
