- Conor McGregor is set to return at UFC 329 after a severe leg injury sustained in 2021.
- Chris Weidman warns that McGregor may face both physical and mental challenges similar to his own post-injury experience.
- Weidman emphasizes that recovery from such injuries can lead to lasting issues, affecting performance and mindset in the octagon.
Conor McGregor‘s shin snapped during his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. Five years later, the Irishman is finally returning from this gruesome injury during International Fight Week at UFC 329. But as his return draws closer, UFC legend Chris Weidman has painted a bleak future for him based on his own run-in with a similar injury.
Weidman also had his shin snapped in the octagon when Urijah Hall checked one of his leg kicks. The horrific injury cost the American two years of his professional career, and he looked like a shadow of his former self when he returned. Now, almost two years after his retirement, Weidman has revealed that the injury never truly healed.
The retired fighter presented a grim picture for the Irishman’s upcoming return from the aforementioned injury. The former middleweight champion revealed that despite having a chip on his shoulder about being 100% when he returned, he was simply not the same fighter. Moreover, Weidman thinks the same issues may plague Conor McGregor upon his return.
It affected me way more than I thought it was going to affect me…it’s going to be a lot for him. It’s going to be a lot. The leg, the time off, he’s got an uphill battle. I don’t know what issues, like I still deal with issues in my leg.

The UFC Hall of Famer then laid out how this injury continues to affect him, even 5 years after it happened.
Weird scar, and the muscles never came back. My quad is still like, I don’t know, like five centimeters smaller than my left. I do leg extensions, and I try my best. But it just, it’s never came back the same.

The ‘All-American’ did not have a great UFC run after returning from the injury inflicted by Urijah Hall. Weidman went 1-2 in the UFC, with his only win being a decision victory over Bruno Silva, a fight marred by fouls and controversy.
Nonetheless, this isn’t the first time Chris Weidman has discussed Conor McGregor’s return. Even while the Irishman’s return was still a rumor, the American fighter had brought up the mental toll this comeback could take on him.
Chris Weidman warned Conor McGregor that this injury could affect his head
In the abovementioned Deep Waters clip, Chris Weidman had laid out all the physical hindrances that the return from his gruesome injury had presented. However, before Dana White announced the former double champion’s return, Weidman had predicted the Irishman’s return while also laying out the mental struggles he could face heading into it.

Weidman said that he hoped for the best for Conor McGregor. However, the former champion followed up the well-wishes with a story about how he discovered during his comeback fight that he had a mental block that was hindering him. The 41-year-old revealed this on an earlier episode of the Deep Waters podcast.
I was fine in training, but when I got into the actual first fight since that leg injury, I was getting kicked, and as soon as I went to throw my kick back — because that was always the instinct, you get kicked, you kick back — I just couldn’t do it. My body wouldn’t let me do it. It’s just crazy when you go through a traumatic injury like that, how it can affect your head.

For his UFC 329 return, ‘The Notorious’ faces more than just the uphill task of bouncing back from his injury and subsequent layoff. McGregor will also try to get back to winning ways against a tough opponent in Max Holloway, who has been preparing for this fight for a while now.
With a 1-3 record in his last 4 UFC fights and many years of inactivity, the odds are stacked against Conor McGregor at UFC 329.
