In Short
  • Jalen Brunson has led the New York Knicks to their first NBA Finals in 27 years.
  • Michelle Beadle claims Luka Doncic's style of play does not lead to championships.
  • Chandler Parsons argues Doncic has taken a worse team to the Finals than the current Knicks.

Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson were both drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2018 NBA draft. There was a lot of hype surrounding Doncic, as he was the No. 3 pick and a potential franchise player. Meanwhile, the same couldn’t be said about Brunson, as he was picked as the 33rd overall pick.

The two took the Mavs to the Western Conference Finals in 2022. While they lost the series to the Golden State Warriors in six games, Brunson announced himself to the NBA world during their playoff run. His performances led to a four-year deal with the New York Knicks in the 2022 offseason.

Brunson is on a good run this season as he has led the Knicks to their first NBA Finals in 27 years, while Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers were beaten in the second round. The recent results saw Chandler Parsons ask Michelle Beadle if the Knicks would be in their current position if Doncic were leading the Knicks. Beadle replied:

No. No, they wouldn’t. I just don’t think Luka’s a championship team guy. If he (Jalen Brunson) wins, all of this conversation changes.

Michelle Beadle on Run It Back

Luka Doncic is coming off one of the best individual seasons in his career and performed at an MVP level. He won the scoring title and was named to the All-NBA First Team. Unfortunately, he suffered a hamstring injury towards the end of the regular season, and he missed the entire playoffs.

Meanwhile, his former teammate Jalen Brunson is playing some of the best basketball of his career. After coming up short in the Eastern Conference Finals last year, many believed that Brunson does not have the size and the game to lead the Knicks to a championship.

But the Knicks guard has more than just proved them wrong in the playoffs this year. He won the Eastern Conference Finals MVP and has put in some big performances during their run.

Luka Doncic has taken a worse team than the Knicks team to the NBA Finals

There is no doubt that Luka Doncic is a special talent. His scoring numbers are off the charts, and very few can manipulate and pass the ball as he does. During the regular season, he averaged 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists in 64 appearances as he led the Lakers to a fourth-place finish in the Western Conference standings.

Doncic has also shown that he is a solid performer during the playoffs. He led the Mavs to the NBA Finals in 2024. Hence, Chandler Parsons disagreed with Michelle Beadle when she said Doncic could not lead the current Knicks team to the finals.

I completely disagree. If Jalen Brunson was on the Lakers team, they would be out of the playoffs right now. [Luka Doncic has] taken a worse team to the [NBA] Finals than this Knicks team. If Brunson beats the Spurs or the Thunder, then we can have this conversation again.

It is very unfair to judge Doncic’s season this year, considering he missed the entire playoffs. However, Brunson has shown the NBA world that the Knicks are legit title contenders as they are currently on an 11-match winning streak.

Antonio Daniels prefers Jalen Brunson over Luka Doncic

It is hard to imagine that two of the best offensive players today were let go by the Mavs. Both players have shown they can perform at a high level when it matters most.

It is no secret that Luka Doncic is a lot more talented and skilled than Jalen Brunson. However, former champion Antonio Daniels chose Brunson over Doncic when it comes to the playoffs.

I would say Brunson. And that reason I’d say that is because I’ve seen Brunson play with and without the ball. As talented as Luka is, and he is crazy talented, he can score from anywhere on the floor and is an excellent passer. But I haven’t seen him play where his usage is low.

While both players are proven playoff performers, Brunson has also shown he can influence the game off the ball. Meanwhile, Doncic is a high usage player, and many believe that style of play does not work when it comes to winning championships.
