I am in contact with the LeBron operation regularly. He has not yet decided that he’s going to play next year. I expect him to do that.

LeBron James has shown the NBA world that he can still play at a high level and step into a bigger role whenever needed. With Luka Doncic missing the entire playoffs this year, it was up to James to carry the heavy workload for the Lakers.
The 41-year-old impressed everyone with his staggering performances in the first round against the Houston Rockets and helped beat them in six games. While the Lakers were clean-swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round, he did put up good numbers as he averaged 23.3 points, six rebounds, and 5.8 assists in four games.
However, with his contract set to expire this year, speculation about his future is growing. Brian Windhorst revealed that James has not yet decided if he will play next year. The ESPN Insider has been covering James since his high school playing days. While he expected James to continue, there is no definitive answer about his future as of yet.
LeBron James is waiting for the Lakers’ free agency vision
It is no secret that LeBron James has multiple suitors if he decides to leave the Lakers. The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors have expressed interest in acquiring his services. In his 23rd season, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in 60 appearances.

Brian Windhorst revealed that James’ camp is waiting for the Lakers to make the first move.
From what I am told, the LeBron side is waiting for the Lakers to come to LeBron. The LeBron side would like the Lakers to come and say, ‘LeBron, here’s our plan for you,’ or, ‘Here’s what we’re offering’.
Brian Windhorst on “The Hoop Collective” podcast
It looks like James still wants to compete for a championship. The Lakers are far from it at the moment. Hence, it remains to be seen what moves the Lakers pull off in the offseason and if it could convince James to sign a new deal with them.
Can LeBron James help the Cleveland Cavaliers win a championship?
The rumors of LeBron James returning to the Cavs are stronger than ever. There are reports that the franchise is very keen on signing him for the next season. Both are looking to win a championship and it could prove to be a beneficial move for both parties.
However, Brian Windhorst doesn’t believe that James makes the Cavs a better team if he decides to join them.
I am going to tell you two things. I don’t think LeBron helps the team defensively. Their (Cavs) problem is their defense. They have several challenges but their biggest problem is defense and he doesn’t help you. If you trade one of your good defensive players, specifically I would say Jarrett Allen or Max Strus, if you would have to trade one of those two guys to get LeBron, I’m not sure you are ahead.

The Cavs had a disappointing end to their 2025-26 campaign. While they did make it to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since James’ departure in 2018, they were clean-swept by the New York Knicks. Their defense was left exposed far too many times, and James is not a player who can elevate a team defensively as he once did.
