Any basketball fan watching Game 1 of the NBA Finals knew that Victor Wembanyama was not playing to his potential. What they also knew was that Jalen Brunson just proved why he should not be counted out as one of the best in the business.

The New York Knicks made it no secret that they were going to build their roster to complement the 6’2″ guard. Many of their decisions drew backlash, but now it all seems to be working as per their plan.

With Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, and OG Anunoby drawing attention, it has freed up enough space for their point guard to inflict significant damage.

It was evident in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, as Brunson single-handedly made James Harden look old and slow.

Now, in the Finals, he did the same to the San Antonio Spurs. His exceptional second-half dominance allowed his teammates to stop Wembanyama from going off. Moreover, he did it despite suffering a knee injury earlier in the first half.

He’s the antithesis… Well, guys are overpaid, he’s not overpaid… Teams are tanking, they didn’t tank, they built it the right way, they built the right culture around that. Load management, when is he load managing? ‘Oh, I hurt my pinky toe, I can’t play.’ This dude hurts his knee, he hurts his ankle, he comes back in, and he closes a game down the stretch.

His Get Up colleagues agreed that Jalen Brunson is proving all the notions about small guards to be wrong. Moreover, Williams believes he is changing the outlook on NBA players from load managing and entitled players to someone who works hard to win.

Jalen Brunson is playing with a ‘lot of heart’, feels Nick Young

Jay Williams made a point that Jalen Brunson is proving how an NBA player should endear himself to his job. Amidst all the narratives of load management and playing hurt, the point guard has proved time and again that one can endure the pain and continue to come up clutch.

When the cast of Gil’s Arena were discussing this, former champion Nick Young made another point about the pressure the Knicks’ point guard is under, and how he is proving he can handle it.

He got a whole city on his back. That’s a lot of pressure playing in New York. For somebody to do what he’s doing right now, that takes heart and a lot of guts. Because at any moment, New York will kill you. A lot of people are not ready for that spotlight. The lights are bright.

The former Laker added that many players have quit the Knicks due to the pressure from fans and the New York media, only to thrive elsewhere.

But ‘big body’ Brunson is proving that not only can he thrive under pressure, but he is doing so in a way that should silence any criticism about small guards not being able to lead their respective teams.

Skip Bayless believes Jalen Brunson made Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs quit

While speaking on the subject of small guards, longtime analyst Skip Bayless started to give his opinion on how he saw Jalen Brunson going to work against the Spurs.

The shortest player on the floor outplayed, by far the tallest player on the floor, when it mattered the most… It just broke San Antonio’s will.

The 74-year-old went on to detail how the Knicks’ game plan froze out Victor Wembanyama. He warned that the East champions will try to do the same in the next three games, which will make it difficult for the Spurs.

Before he got to it, he dissected how the Knicks’ most vocal leader executed a move on De’Aaron Fox that left the veteran guard off guard. But what it did more than anything was break the Spurs’ will. After that, the game was out of their hands.
