Maja Chwalinska is one win away from a fairytale French Open triumph. The World No.114, who had just one Grand Slam match before this year’s Roland Garros, continues her astonishing run at the tournament. She will now take on the eighth seed Mirra Andreeva in the championship match showdown on Saturday (June 6).
Andreeva has dropped only one set at the French Open, crushing other opponents with ease. The Russian star at 19 is on the brink of making history as the youngest Grand Slam champion since Emma Raducanu in 2021. She ended Marta Kostyuk‘s 17-match unbeaten run on Thursday (June 4) and was at her best throughout the match. She will be a big threat to Chwalinska in the final.

Maja Chwalinska vs. Mirra Andreeva: Match Preview
Maja Chwalinska has been largely unknown on tour until this year’s French Open. Her career-high ranking was World No. 113, achieved in May. With just one main draw Grand Slam main draw win before the Roland Garros, she wasn’t expected to progress past the opening round.
The Polish star had struggled with depression for two years and took an indefinite break from tennis after losing in the opening round of qualifying at Wimbledon in 2021.
However, at the French Open, everything appears to have clicked into place for a player who once feared that she might retire for good. After winning her qualifying matches, she defeated Qinwen Zheng 6-4, 6-0, Elise Mertens 6-4, 6-0, Maria Sakkari 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Diane Parry 6-3, 6-2. On Wednesday (June 3), she stunned 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya 7-6(3), 6-3 before stunning Diana Shnaider 7-6(4), 6-4 to reach the final.

Mirra Andreeva, on the other hand, has enjoyed relative success this season. She claimed the Adelaide International title before reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open. However, the 19-year-old had a difficult couple of weeks in February and March, failing to defend her title at the Indian Wells Open. However, there was a resurgence in form in April, with a title at the Linz Open and a semi-final run at the Stuttgart Open.
Andreeva then got to the final of the Madrid Open, but lost the title to Marta Kostyuk in straight sets. At the French Open, she has been in her best form, defeating Fiona Ferro, Marie Bouzková, and Jil Teichmann in straight sets, while overcoming Marina Bassols Ribera from a set down to beat the Spaniard 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. The eighth seed dismantled Sorana Cirstea 6‑0, 6‑3 in just 56 minutes and did the same against Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 16 minutes.
Maja Chwalinska vs. Mirra Andreeva: Match Prediction
Maja Chwalinska has the opportunity to become the second qualifier in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam, following Emma Raducanu’s achievement at the 2021 US Open. It will be a fitting conclusion to a French Open filled with spectacular shocks and upsets from the start of the competition.

But that is very difficult to foresee at the French Open final. Realistically, Mirra Andreeva is in better form than Chwalinska. With the way she knocked out the in-form Marta Kostyuk on Thursday (June 4), she can easily beat the Polish star in the final. She’s the youngest woman to reach the Roland Garros singles final this century, after Coco Gauff and Kim Clijsters.
On paper, Andreeva is easily the winner of the French Open final, but anything can happen in tennis and sports generally. With the level of unpredictability at this year’s Roland Garros, it will not be a surprise if Chwalinska upsets Andreeva to win the title. She has beaten top players at the tournament, but she has yet to overcome a top-10 player in this year’s French Open draw.
Match Prediction: Mirra Andreeva to win in three sets.
