Gunther succumbed to an unfair ending to his WWE title match against Cody Rhodes at Clash in Italy. ‘The Ring General’ will have one more chance to right the wrongs in two weeks’ time on SmackDown in Kansas City, where he’ll get his title rematch with a stipulation that the Austrian will reveal next Friday.

The Vienna-born wrestler hijacked the opening of this week’s SmackDown. He started throwing the furniture around, with him being furious over the screwy finish to his showdown with Rhodes at Clash in Italy. Gunther affirmed that he put his foot under the bottom rope knowing that the pinfall couldn’t be initiated in such cases.

However, the referee wasn’t able to spot it from his vantage point and went on with the three-count that cost Gunther the match. The latter called out Rhodes for cheating to win and proclaimed that he’d hold the show hostage until justice was served to him. Rhodes, the champ, didn’t take long to come out, and he admitted that the former Imperium boss was right.

‘The QB1’ was willing to bestow the title rematch on ‘The Career Killer’ on SmackDown in Bologna itself. Before Gunther could respond, Sami Zayn interrupted both of them. ‘The Ring General’ vehemently asked Zayn to stay out of this, as the WWE title picture didn’t involve him. The former ‘Honorary Uce’ knew he had never been a world champion.

Zayn fired back at Gunther by reminding him that he had beaten him for a championship before, which happened at WrestleMania 40 when ‘The Underdog from the Underground’ ended the Austrian’s 666-day IC title reign. Having said that, Rhodes turned his attention towards Zayn, and he knew that the latter was after his WWE title.

The former AEW EVP, however, stated that he was engaged with Gunther in that moment. The erstwhile El Generico asserted that’s exactly why their friendship was hanging on by a thread because Rhodes had time and again blown him off when he simply could’ve talked things out with Zayn. The latter then posed himself as the biggest threat to Rhodes’ WWE title, and they got into each other’s faces before Gunther shoved Rhodes into Zayn.

‘The Great Liberator’ freed Rhodes from the clutches of Gunther this time around as opposed to a few weeks ago when he let ‘The Ring General’ squeeze the air out of Rhodes’ lungs. As Zayn and Gunther started brawling outside the ring, Rhodes went for the suicide dive and inadvertently took out Zayn, who got pushed into the way by Gunther.

The former Walter knew his job was done, so he was already halfway up the ramp. Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes instantly apologized to Sami Zayn for the miscue and even offered his hand. Zayn got back on his own and walked away. ‘The Prodigal Son’ had a disappointed look on his face knowing his situation with Zayn was getting bad to worse.

Is WWE setting up Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther vs. Sami Zayn for Night of Champions?

Later in the show, Cody Rhodes ran into the SmackDown GM Nick Aldis, who asked ‘The QB1’ if he was still willing to do the rematch with Gunther. Rhodes didn’t back-pedal and absolutely wanted to throw it down with ‘The Career Killer’ one more time. Aldis informed Rhodes that Gunther would reveal the stipulation on next week’s SmackDown for their showdown the following Friday in Kansas City.

And after what transpired between Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn on this week’s SmackDown, the fans should expect the Laval-born wrestler to have a role in Rhodes vs. Gunther. It would be interesting to see how Zayn would respond now that his relationship with Rhodes has gone completely off the rails.

With the Night of Champions PLE coming up in Saudi Arabia, Zayn is bound to have his presence in a major way on the show. It’s starting to become obvious that Zayn might receive his crack at the WWE title against Rhodes at the Riyadh-slated premium live event. However, there’s a huge possibility that the said match will also feature Gunther under triple threat rules. The outcome of the Austrian’s upcoming bout with Rhodes for the championship is expected to pave the way forward.
