Last week, the Major League Baseball (MLB) finally pushed for a salary cap. After years of discussion, MLB owners proposed a salary tax. On Friday, Donald Trump voiced his support regarding this.

On May 27, the Major League Baseball Players’ Association (MLBPA) initiated the negotiations regarding the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The union proposed several major changes, including the implementation of a “competitive-integrity tax” that would penalize teams spending less than $150 million.

The league was not in favor of this and turned it down. A day later, on Thursday, they proposed a hard salary cap and a salary floor.

According to the proposals, the league would have a salary cap of $245.3 million and a salary floor of $171.2 million. This marked the first time since 1994 that the owners pushed for a salary cap. When they did it last time, it led to a huge strike resulting in the cancellation of 948 games, including the 1994 postseason and World Series.

In their statement, the MLBPA claimed that they will continue to review these proposals. They, however, expressed that a salary cap suffocated the competition by offering owners an “excuse” for “inaction” and “mediocrity.”

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump was asked about this on Air Force One. The 79-year-old, who is a huge sports fan, endorsed the implementation of a salary cap.

If you don’t have a salary cap, you don’t have a sport, because they can’t help themselves. Football has a salary cap. They should have done it a long time ago.

Trump also pointed out the 1994 incident and claimed it was shocking that the league did not have a salary cap.

It’s shocking, frankly, that they didn’t put a cap on many years ago. They had a chance to do a cap but they blew it.

Donald Trump added

Among the Big 4 leagues in the USA, the MLB is the only one that does not feature a cap. At the moment, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets, the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Atlanta Braves are above the proposed limit.

Meanwhile, around 15 teams are below the proposed $171.2 million salary floor. Almost half the league is below the tax payroll limit suggested by the owners.

The current CBA will expire on December 1. If there is no agreement between the league and the union, there could be a lockout similar to the one in December 2021. That time, the lockout lasted around 99 days, leading to a delay in Spring Training and the start of the 2022 season.

Mets’ superstar Juan Soto is against the salary cap

After the MLB owners pushed for a salary cap, many fans supported this decision. However, some are opposing this. On Friday, New York Mets’ superstar Juan Soto questioned the implementation of a salary cap.

The Mets are one of the teams that are above the proposed limit. If the proposal does go through, they will be required to reduce their payroll.

Soto, who signed the biggest contract in MLB history at $765 million in December 2024, does not seem to be a fan of this. The Dominican Republic international expressed that it was “not right” to have a salary cap.

I don’t think that’s right, to have a cap. Baseball is doing great. We’ve been increasing every year. It’s been great for baseball. We are in the best moment in baseball right now in all kinds of ways. Why should we have a cap?

Juan Soto said as per Will Sammon of The Athletic

Soto, however, is not the only player who has opposed this. Last week, Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal also spoke against this and said it was “not good for players.”

Only time will tell what will happen next. So far, the early negotiations between the league and the players’ union have not looked promising.
